Talking about minarets in Isfahan, there are some minarets taller and at least 500 years older than minarets of Shah Mosque, such as:

Ali Minaret:

Nice ones, but remember to post some info and a source when you show that nice pictures. I will make an index in the starting thread and will double check all info before I add it. (Then please discuss the sources with me through PMs if there's something unclear, but I will put up more info when I start off)

It was just a reply to the previous post, I had posted some info and a source in my first post in this thread about Gonbad-e Qabus: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...3&postcount=20

There are also some other minarets from the same period (early 12th century) and almost the same height (48 m) around the city of Isfahan.

When it comes to old tall buildings, Shibam (Yemen) and its Manhattan-like scape is almost a cliche.

Oldest buildings there date back to the 16th c. Some of them are more than 15 stories and 40 metres tall, which is pretty impressive for old mud buildings.

St Paul's Cathedral, London 117m (366ft), dating from 1707

the old cathedral, destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 was even bigger, and taller dating from 1087-1314 (how long it took to build!). It was 149m (489 ft) tall.
