I really liked the Montevideo waterfront when I visited. That was 20 years ago before they started pedestrian schemes in the old part of the city.

nice photos of the city.
just wondering why the city is called by its name despite the absence of monte (mountain) in or around the place? Vancouver&Burbs TravelPhotosUpdate Last edited by capricorn2000; March 2nd, 2011 at 08:34 PM. |

Is called Montevideo because the "monte" of the city was the sixth(VI) from east to west ( de Este a Oeste) in the riverMonte+VI+de+E+O= Montevideo But other story says that the reason is because when the portugueses arrived and saw the "mountain" said: Monte eu video! but these story has not sense, because in portugues he shoud says: Monte eu vejo! This other story of the city name is based on the idea that the portuguese would have seen a mountain and said: ''Monte vide eu'', which is the portuguese version for the name of the city (Montevidéu) and means I saw a mountain, and not ''Monte eu video'' (this does not exist in Portuguese). Then it makes sense.
