PAX figures do not surprise me neither, as i have said before, without any new routes/airlines, BHX will not grow, simple as that.

I suggest that we all contact the airport on this matter. We should express our concern why there are no new routes and some suggestions for some that could help the airport. Who's with me?

In response to hoody, nothing on Qatar Airways. That's all disappeared now.

no one will be with you hassan, the only way they will listen to you is if youre using your feet to increase pax figures, which if you are only 13, i anticipate will only happen when your parents take you on holiday!

the only way to have any form of impact is to apply pressure politically... write to your local councillor, your local news paper etc....

A deci Bell is just a logarithmic ratio, it is useless without a unit and to what the reference is in ratio to.

With Sound Pressure Level, there are four ways of weighting (A,B,C and D). A-weighting is based on Fletcher Munson equal loudness contours and is similar to how humans hear, this is no longer used as it is based on Phon scale is not an SI unit, however it does give a more accurate measure for quieter sounds (as we do not perceive all frequencies the same at different intensities). C is what is most commonly used today, and is more accurate for louder sounds, B is a halfway house between A and C.

Aeroplanes we use D weighting. That's because we hear random noise louder than a single tone.

For measuring sound loudness, we measure an average over time. Usually Laq or Leq.

To your question simbastyles. A change from 87 to 85 (guessing Leq 87dB(D) but the press would never write that) is a change of 1/4 the loudness. Very significant and very audible.

I'm not sure if you can use D weighing for Leq. I'll consult a book a little later.

This question is completely off topic other than being related to noise, and it is aimed at Simon to answer.

I know nothing about the volume of my speakers and know nothing about dB's, anyway, I do know that the max volume of my speakers is 80dB and with an Mp3 player that can play up to 110dB, does that mean with the combination of the Mp3 player playing at full blast, through the speakers, would it be 190dB?

cheers.

I see British Airways, noting planning permission for Heathrow's third runway is now all but dead have said they will have to take their business abroad!
Why is this company that as deserted all Regional British Airports is still allowed to use the name "British" when it does not serve Britain.
Yes they are a multi-million pound business, chasing business, but please do it under a new name and let someone committed to Britain and its regional airports adopt the name.

Sandwiches at Boots at BHX are at premium prices compared to a High Street Boots.

We only bought bottles of water from that Boots. Eat our sandwiches that we got outside the airport (while waiting in Departures).

One month has gone by fast since I was there!

At the Nice end (way back home), couldn't find anything worth eating, all I got was a brownie for €3.00.

Jaguar/Land rover name on Airbridges at BHX

Good stuff BHX, other airports like MAN and EDI have RBS, so why not JLR for BHX.

Passengers travelling through Birmingham airport will soon be guided along their journey by two of the world's leading automotive brands thanks to a new agreement which will see Jaguar and Land Rover provide support vehicles and airside branding throughout the region's largest aeronautic hub.

To mark the commencement of the arrangement, the airport last week took delivery of four Land Rover Discovery 4's, that will provide essential support to the Airfield Safety Unit in their daily patrol duties.

Will Heynes, the Airport’s Operations Director, said, “Being a major local employer and neighbour of the Airport, we’ve always had a close relationship with Land Rover but this is the first time we’ve entered into a tangible partnership. We’re really proud to display such strong and successful brands as Jaguar and Land Rover, which overseas passengers will easily recognise.”

In addition to the airside support vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover branding will soon feature on ten air bridges operating from the new multi million pound transit gates and across the Airport’s fleet of airside passenger transfer buses. Travelers will also be able to see some of the company's latest models on display in the revamped departure lounge throughout the year.

Commenting on the arrangement, John Edwards, Global Brand Director for Land Rover said: "Jaguar Land Rover has a longstanding and strong connection to the region with two of its manufacturing plants based in and around Birmingham. I am therefore delighted to see that Birmingham Airport has elected to use Land Rover Discovery's to support the essential work of the Airfield Safety team patrolling the site. I am also pleased that Jaguar and Land Rover are involved in an innovative and engaging advertising campaign which will bring our two iconic motoring brands to the attention of commuters and holiday makers from around the world".

I usually stick to Tesco or Sainsbury's when they have sandwiches from Ł1.00 to Ł1.50.

I read elsewhere that the Chinese 747 is due at 19:20 and will stop the night, noy sure if it's still the case.

I guess this fits here.

Midlands city set to build on strong relationship for investment and jobs

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will visit Birmingham this weekend on his first stop
on a reciprocal visit to the UK following Prime Minister David Cameron’s trip
to China in November last year.

Premier Wen’s decision to begin his UK visit in Birmingham reflects the
strength of the city’s strategic relationship with China following significant
investments in the region’s industry-leading automotive sector and
long-standing, collaborative culture and civic programmes.

The Chinese Premier will be landing at Birmingham Airport and visiting the
Longbridge MG Motors car plant, home to recent major investment by the Shanghai
Automotive Industry Company [SAIC].

With an extension of Birmingham Airport’s runway creating direct routes from
the city to China, and further opportunities uncovered by its inward investment
programme, Business Birmingham, many believe the visit could lead to further
significant investment and jobs in the region.

Birmingham will welcome Premier Wen Jiabao ahead of his visit with the Prime
Minister and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, who will be amongst those
welcoming Premier Wen to the UK, said:

“This visit is an endorsement from the very top of the Chinese state of the
importance of the relationship between Birmingham and China.

Over the last seven years we have made great strides to ensure Birmingham’s
connections with China were prioritised and enriched, helping to build a strong
relationship for this city with a growing economic superpower.

“We have been working with the Chinese Ambassador, his Embassy and the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to ensure that Birmingham gives the best possible
welcome to the head of the Chinese people and we are looking forward to renewing
our friendships with China as a result of this historic visit.”

Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit will build on Birmingham’s strong business ties
with China, clearly demonstrated by SAIC’s long term commitment to Birmingham
and ownership of MG and its site at Longbridge. SAIC, one of the 10 largest car
makers in the world, has made significant investment in the MG plant at
Longbridge, and recently announced its decision to resume MG production at the
site – retaining 400 jobs in the UK.

The company also announced the opening of a ÂŁ5m design studio and technical
centre at Longbridge – demonstrating its commitment to the area’s talent and
entrepreneurial environment. The attraction of SAIC, and its predecessors NAC,
to the site was in large part due to the high level relationships formed by
Birmingham’s civic leadership.

The West Midlands has a strong reputation for automotive excellence, with
100,000 employed in the sector across the region, accounting for over 30 per
cent of all UK manufactured automotive production and over 60 per cent of all UK
automotive R&D. Business Birmingham uses this strength to showcase local talent,
innovation and expertise, and attract further investment to the area.

Since 2003, after London, Birmingham has attracted more Chinese investment
projects than any other UK city, receiving ÂŁ76.59m in capital investment and
creating 596 jobs during this period. In 2010, Birmingham received ÂŁ8.68m in
capital investment from China creating 320 jobs.

As Birmingham Airport looks to extend its runway, investing ÂŁ40 million in
infrastructure to bring more passengers from distant locations, the potential
for further investment from China in the region is growing.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport, said:

“Birmingham and the wider West Midlands is known, not only for its automotive
and manufacturing innovations and expertise, but for its wider business talent
and entrepreneurial attitude. The city’s well established ties with China are
extremely important to Birmingham’s development as a leading European business
hub. The Premier’s decision to visit Birmingham reflects China’s recognition
of the city’s growing stature.

“The new runway extension at Birmingham Airport will play a central role in
bringing Birmingham closer to its Chinese colleagues as direct flights connect
the city to the Far East. This level of connectivity cannot be overstated –
direct links bring direct investments closer.”

The city’s business ties with China have also been strengthened by those of
cultural appreciation. The city is twinned with Guangzhou, the capital and
largest city of the Guangdong province in Southern China, and in 2004 the two
cities signed a Memorandum Of Understanding to develop links in education and
culture. In 2006 City Leader, Mike Whitby led a delegation to Guangzhou to sign
a Sister-City agreement and also visited Nanjing, home of original Longbridge
investors NAC [Nanjing Automobile Corporation] to promote Birmingham as the
natural home for automotive investment.

Building on this in 2008, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham visited Guangzhou, and in
January 2009, Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) successfully toured China – as
Birmingham’s sister city, Guangzhou was the first city in which BRB chose to
perform.

His Excellency, Mr. Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to the UK said:

“This visit will be the first by a Chinese Premier to the UK since the
coalition government was in place. The meetings will provide another important
top level exchange between our two countries following Prime Minster David
Cameron’s visit to China last November. It is expected that the meetings in
London will set the shape and direction of China-UK relations in the months and
years to come.

“In my role as Chinese Ambassador to the UK, I have been to Birmingham several
times. I have learned first hand how Birmingham has built on its heritage to
create one of the most vibrant cities of Europe. Council Leader, Mike Whitby,
proudly told me about the city’s leadership in sports and culture, and I have
seen for myself the strengths of Birmingham as an industrial and education
centre. I hope and I’m confident that the ties between China and Birmingham
will continue to flourish.”

City Leader Mike Whitby added:

“Building strong relationships with economic global heavyweights such as China
take time, consideration and commitment. However, the potential for investment
and jobs, as well as improving our international reputation and cultural and
civic appreciation are immeasurable. Our relationship with China has been of
significant value and learning to the city and we look forward to building on it
with Premier Jiabao during his visit.”

Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to Birmingham is part of a tour designed to
strengthen China’s relations with the UK, Hungary and Germany following recent
visits to France, Portugal and Spain.

He should be able to see Longbridge from the air, if the Chinese plane flys over Longbridge before touching down at BHX.

All I saw last month was most of the land for the Longbridge Town Centre scheme (from above).

I've had a scout on the interweb for interesting movements at BHX for a 747 or anything Chinese but to no avail. Is he landing at BHX or choppering into Longbridge from LHR?
