That building to the right has such a terrible cladding.

Looks like every modern building in Japan. It was built in the 90's as I remember, could be much worse.

Those commieblocks are still a bit of an eyesore, next to those nice old kamienice

Nothing we can do about that. We can only protect our eastern borders so that this won't happen again.

but even the commie blocks tell an interesting story in the urban landscape....and you can live quite comfortably in then. But indeed they are an eyesore and were a huge urban planning mistake, but Polish people were not in charge when this happened. Now we are, but looking at the chaos of advertising everywhere and the lack of respect by cars for the pedestrian realm, not sure if we are any more urbane at the moment.

They are not that much of an eyesore. At least they have a paint job. They could easily be improved to look 10x better, but nobody is putting the effort or money into them.

Just be glad they don't look like the crap we have in Romania.

Amazing, really, how these commieblocks are vanishing among the large skyscraper and suddenly cease to be so annoying

I think with much more infill and no doubt more skyscrapers in this district of Warsaw they will utterly disappear and become curious urban planning footnotes.

very interesting pics showing Polish cities post war in colour - pictures were taken by an American student from Harvard in 1947 as part of a "Studytour" program:

^ What a tragic sight. Almost the same as the black and white versions, except brown where black is.

it is shocking, especially ancient streets that had been teeming with life for centuries now overtaken by nature.

you never cease to amaze me with your finds rychlik. btw, I must say that the Palace of Culture despite its associations with Stalin is a true masterpiece of architecture. Anyone visiting Warsaw should see its interiors and its impressive facilities. Post war during the reconstruction Warsaw was offered a gift from Stalin of this huge palatial facility or a subway, and then of course Stalin decided it would be the palace. Subway would have been better, but unwittingly Stalin set a new skyscraper trend for Warsaw as new towers have recently cropped up trying to minimize the palaces impact on the city skyline...but it still stands out.
