Polna 40 - I like projects like these that not only restore historic buildings but also repair Warsaw's many tattered corners caused by street realignments or widenings and deliberate destruction of what were once the most beautiful landmark corner structures:

Now

The building to the right will be gutted leaving just the fašade, the new building will fit into its former footprint and the leftover patch of land

these two buildings will be restored to their pre-war beauty

front and right side will be demolished

thanks cane90

Pre-war images of 38 and 40 and other buildings that once existed

40 Pre-war

Project

Progress

shoring up walls that are to remain with steel girders

thanks cane90

Would love to see more infill like this one in Praga district that rebuilds tradional streetscapes destroyed by war and modernist/commie block spatial planning. Really appreciate the details, consistent fenestration and how it is horizontally articulated to maintain a traditional scale to the facades:

Europejski Hotel Restoration/Redevelopment

fašade looks almost ready, windows are going in and new attic almost complete, awaiting the bris-soleil (first one appears to be installed on last pic)

An interesting Warsaw film from 1955, some ruins and some interesting re-construction progress.

Excellent film on the reconstruction of Warsaw, a worthwhile reminder and shows how much more of Warsaw actually survived. This is a recent film that assesses the success of the BOS (Bureau for the Reconstruction of Warsaw) institution in rebuilding the city:

What's the connection between the last two pictures? The building looks differently on them. Are there two different restoration projects?

The Dekert Side of the Old Town Rynek (Market) has been undergoing a massive restoration and revitalization/adaptation for several years now. It houses the Museum of Warsaw History. The recently restored basements that date back to the 14th century have been re-opened, the rest awaits reopening at the end of this year possibly. Recently the facades have been gradually unveiled> It should be noted that this is the most original and almost intact side of the old town, two of the buildings survived almost completely intact as you can see from historic pics of ruins below:

thanks hp7960

post war

you can see here the kamienica (townhouse) on the left. the front wall actually collapsed from the second floor because of an unusual hurricane that hit Warsaw in 1947

you can see the 2 and maybe 3 buildings in the centre that look like their ceilings survived. this was owing to restoration work that started in 1939 that fireproofed the buildings so when Nazis torched the buildings they did not catch fire as the others did. Luckily for some reason these buildings were not dynamited unlike thousands of other historic buildings in Warsaw

this was taken just after the Nazi occupation ended, the war was over and the soviet Russian occupation began

a close up of the two surviving buildings (that is, interiors as well)

this picture still shows the remnants of barricades

Shortly after Reconstruction

details of the most famous almost completely original Kamienica Under the Negro

1938, to be precise. Hempel removed rotten wooden ceilings and replaced them with reinforced concrete. Well, if Paris builders could do it in Louvre, why wouldn't he?

Actually most weren't dynamited. Either bombed (and in this case it was sheer luck that they weren't), or burned (in this case Germans didn't even try to set it on fire as they knew the buildings will survive anyway). The only way to get rid of them would be to blow it up by demolition charges, but with Eastern Front 500 metres away it would be suicidal.

Btw, this is the similar reason for relatively large number of original buildings in the eastern (even) side of Krakowskie Przedmieście. Whatever was spared from setting up on fire till mid September '44, usually survived till Jan '45, more or less.

Wow! That's got to be one of the best restoration projects going on in Warsaw at the moment. Hopefully when it's finished it will give impetus for more major projects!

They look like pre-war modernism.

some survived intact, some were rebuilt and then later stripped of details and some newly built post war infill, typical Warsaw saga. I think there is one or two pre-war modernist buildings as well. This street has a fair number of original buildings on the west side and one long commie block on the east sadly but it's hidden behind trees luckily.
