they modified it from the original design where there was to be a big reflecting pool where the central lawn is. I thought that the water would nicely muffle the sound of traffic nearby. overall, a very good design though.

A lawn muffles noise much better than a water surface. To be precise, flat water acts like sound reflector rather then absorber.

Quintessential Warsaw scene, infill rises to fill an empty corner, a prewar apartment house gets facelifted and a ruin awaits (shortly) a dramatic restoration:

Amazing photos of the years after the war, arising again after all those years of destruction.

Some interesting pics of Warsaw early after WWII, looks understandably very shabby around the edges despite having already achieved a monumental task, but so much more in front of them...and today decades later despite billions invested over the past decade, still looks incomplete in parts, but there are far fewer such parts now: (thanks filosss for leading me to this site)

1946

1950's

early to mid sixties

late sixties, just a few (thanks Built to Destroy)

not sure about all those little fountains, would rather have maybe two larger more impactful fountains at either end of the lawn.

This picture really sums up the essence of Warsaw when I first visited many years ago. About 1/3 reasonable intact in some areas, 1/3 semi-ruined and 1/3 patched up and smoothed over (wygladzone) with original decoration removed more befitting a home in a workers' paradise.

where did you get that information dickpound? Looks possible that it is a surviving fragment just like the surviving pine cone finial that is only surviving remnant of the once grand Kazanowski Palace in Warsaw:

and this lion that the Swedes stole during Deluge and is now in Stockholm at the Norrbro bridge
