The Warsaw Royal Castle, with the exception of a few extant walls (gothic elevation seen below) and the massive basements and arcades at the foot of the east elevation, is a complete but meticulously accurate reconstruction. The Constitution of May 3, 1791, Europe's first modern codified national constitution, as well as the second-oldest national constitution in the world, was drafted here by the Four-Year Sejm.

It's one of the best or maybe the best castle reconstruction in the world - btw - great deal of elements are original - they were hidden before Germans blew up the castle.

Yes, I do recall reading that hundreds of thousands of elements were reincorporated into the castle as was also the practise in the entire old town.

Yeah, I always wondered how the curators were able to hide those massive Matejko paintings.

I'll throw in some pics I took at the Palace on the Water. The interior was burned in the war but restored. I am not sure how much of the exterior is original. Again, the restoration is beautiful.

Concerning the paintings and furniture, I was told by a curator that in a time of crisis (war) every museum/palace employee is required to drop everything they are doing and try and save as much as they can.

I didn't go into Lazieki Palace because there was some sort of gala taking place there, but the interior and exterior are, by Warsaw standards, very original. The building's furnishings were carted off (and later returned) and during the last stages of WWII, the retreating Nazis drilled a series of holes in the front facade in order to dynamite the structure. They ran out of time and set it ablaze. Only the portion of the facade not directly on the water burned, but for a short period of time.

A very curious trend as emerged in Warsaw that has architectural purists up in arms...Warsaw's many interwar period modernist blocks are getting a facelift. You might think nothing could be worse than those grey blocks, but many find that the garish colours of recently renovated blocks are off-putting. You be the judge:

Waterfront Revitalization

The revitalization of the Wisla waterfront has really been kick-started by the Copernicus Science Centre. It looks spectacular and really draws the crowds. Unfortunately no one told me that the centre stops selling tickets an hour before closing - we raced down but could not see inside sadly, so no pics, but maybe next time. Enjoy enjoy these:

Darhet beat me too. I was going to post, but had to walk my dogs, now I come back and wow all that work is done. thanks

You did forget one that provides some context for these pictures:

I really like these picture because their sharp perfect quality of resolution makes this post war period of Warsaw history so much more real. As much as I like balck and white, and b/w art photography, colour for me is much more real. Can't imagine how they lived then. The stacks of bricks everywhere tell how much effort was put into reassembling the old city with materials salvaged from the ruins. This is how all of Warsaw looked with few exceptions - makes ytou really appreciate what has been accomplished. If only we could all spend all of our efforts on building rather than rebuilding after wars we would be so much further ahead.

I would like to do comparisons but I can't identify some of the locations. See the first few pages of this thread for before and afters.

Cheers

What's your source for these photo's? I have never come across them. They look like they were taken a year ago. Very crisp and clear. Wow. Color adds power.
