it does actually work. the strange configuration was devised to maximize sunlight exposure and maintain view corridors to Saski Park so residents in adjacent buildings didn't block this project.

This photo from 1953 of the post-war reconstruction of the old town is as tasty as a fresh-baked bun. The exterior is done and a ready for reconstructed applied arts and frescoes whereas the interiors are in the process of completion as well, although in most cases they are a departure from substandard pre-war condtions and their cramped layouts:

and of course all the basements are original...but of all the original buildings in the old medieval town, 3 survived with almost completely intact and original interiors.

The entire east side was razed to the ground - and I mean, pulverized to the point of dust - as opposed to the other sides which more of less had at least a small percentage of lower portions of their facades somewhat intact. Anyways, a truly amazing feat for Old Town Square

There are three buildings, that is,

Rynek 36

Rynek 34

Nowomiejska 10

and there are several more that have their original facades and partial interiors and virtually all the basements and first floors in the old town are original. In most cases, rear additions and other accretions were removed to allow in light and reduce pre-war overcrowding.

There has been some recent chatter about rebuilding the old 16th century city hall on the old market square - not very realistic...and it would detract from the beautiful square:

meanwhile it looks like the Saski Palace may not be rebuilt for some time. It's not a priority right now given the amount being spent on infrastructure and other new developments more critical to the city's long term development; however, the lack of this historic building leaves a big whole on Pilsudski square and makes it look quite barren. A real shame that reconstruction was halted in 2008 because as is typical in Poland a group of people protested the destruction of the recently uncovered historic basements. They had a point, but the project could have been modified and continued.

In 1818, the Town Hall on the Old Town Market was pulled down, because it was too small for the city which had expanded after incorporation of the jurydykas. The city’s authorities moved to Jabłonowski’s Palace (by the Great Theater), where it stayed until World War II.

So, in order for the old town hall be reconstructed, some existing townhouses would have to be demolished, right? Can someone show its former location and which houses would have to be demolished?

No townhouses (kamienice) would have to demolished to do so, but it is questionable if it is a good idea. But you never know

But how would it work then? There are no empty lots facing the square.

It was in the middle of the square, now there's Mermaid statue on its place. BTW the idea of this reconstruction is completely unrealistic.

Ahh! OK, now I get it! Thanks.

Don't rebuild it then, it looks nicer as it is now.
