No problem. I'm here to help. I like to keep things interesting.

By the way these photographs from Karol Beyer have been discovered as the oldest known original photo's of Warsaw. These photos have come from the National Museum in Warsaw and have been put on show by the History Meeting House in Warsaw. The National Museum has approximately 1000 photographs in storage from this photographer.

Krakowskie Przedmiescie

A manor along the Royal Route (1861). These places were most likely robbed during the war.

spectacular aerial shots! Kopernicus Centre is indeed amazing. Was there last summer with a friend and my friend, a scientist, went back one more time and keeps talking about it....and all the exhibits weren't up and running yet. need more than a week for Warsaw.

On another note, Warsaw's controversial city heritage conservator, Ewa Nekanda-Trepka, is stepping down after ten years. Her achievements include delineating the Warsaw ghetto wall, the restoration of St. Martin's Church, St. Joseph's and a few other sacral structures, revitalization/restoration of the old town basements (most original from 13th Century), renovation of the City of Warsaw museum. Some more dubious achievements, although time will tell, include the new office building on the historic Bank of Poland site and the contemporary addition to the Jasna 6 building. Her detractors, and they may indeed be the vast majority, point out her policy of not restoring buildings to their original form, allowing historic facades to be smoothed down or modernized, and blocking the restoration/reconstruction of numerous buildings and indeed allowing for the destruction of many such as the steam engine train shed in Praga district from the 1860's. Regarded as a dogmatic and abrasive ideologue, she was accused of strictly adhering to the most restrictive interpretation of the Charter of Venice, something Varsavians and Varsavophiles were appalled by given the unique case of Warsaw's total destruction and the cultural value of its historic buildings and the availability of original plans in many cases that were saved by the people of Warsaw, risking their lives, during the war. I will post her achievements once the last few are completed.

Ghetto Walls Project:

Praga Steam Engine Train Shed - 1840's - lost

One of the most tragic losses on Ewa Nekanda-Trepka's watch. Unique buildings like this that bear the patina of time, express the values and workmanship of a bygone era lend so much character and authenicity to a city and so it is particularly tragic to see such losses.

Koszykowa Shopping Arcade - dismantled for conservation by developer, should be incorporated into new development, may be lost too

Thanks Urbanista. Do you think the new conservator will be more in favor of traditional restorations? I hope so. Warsaw's restorations are impressive but I hope they tackle more of the Praga district, for example.
She was more like an "idiot-logue".

Something old has returned to the National Museum in Warsaw - "Murzynka" by Anna Blinska-Bohdanowicz. It was found in a German auction house and the negotiations for its return took only 3 months. It was painted in 1884 and went missing in WW2. It was first deposited in the museum in 1933.

The restoration, readaptation and addition to this pre-war gem is nearing completion, Stefan Szyller's Kasa Pożyczkowa Przemysłowców Warszawskich from 1899:

Here's a fascinating site developed by the Polish Ministry of Culture cataloguing the most important war-time losses in the realm of fine art from painting, books, glass, musical instruments and incunables:

Objects Lost Due to World War II in Poland

What's shocking is the vast amount of priceless personal effects plundered from Poland's royal tombs, many of these in Warsaw.

A few examples:

Queen Leszczynska's 18th Century rosary

King Ladislaus's IV 17th ring

King Sigismundus the Old's 16th century Royal Cross on a chain

Jan Casimirus's 17th Century Royal Chain
