these tenement houses were full of ornamentation and detail that would cost a fortune to replicate today. Praga, right bank Warsaw has lots of these buildings still, but in somewhat rundown shape. This building looks like it had its balconies restored and some stucco work recently. this is how its down largely, in stages.

I love the doors. They don't make them like that anymore.

would love to live in a place like that, shabby chic in a bohemian part of town. you can buy these cheap if you don't mind putting in sweat equity.

one of Warsaw's least known streets, off the beaten tourist track usually, is Bednarska. It was originally known as Gnojna (crap street) where people in olden times would dispose of their refuse at the edge of the escarpment. the street survived WWII almost fully intact, but did require a great deal of reconstruction and restoration. it leads down to mariensztat (German town) that is undergoing lots of restoration now and is beginning to attract more businesses and tourists.mariensztat in its current form is largely a socialist realist post-war fantasy of what was there pre-war. post -war commies loved to recreate these scaled down versions of workers' paradises from days of yore, bulldozing so many grand 19th and 20th century buildings in the process, an ideologically-driven historic falsification, but atleast Bednarska is quite genuine. Could use some ground floor retail and restaurants or something, amazing atmosphere:

thanks filoss for pic.

It's really nice - one of my favourites. I really enjoyed Mariensztat, however, it was extremely dead at night time with only one resto-cafe. Unfortunate, but it's well located, scenic and quite atmospheric ...

Warsaw's new Museum of Modern Art is open for business. Located in a late modern building called Emilia on Emilii Plater Street in Warsaw (near the train station) the inaugural exhibition is "Miasto Na Sprzedaz" (City for Sale). The museum will be located here for only 4 years while the new facility is built on Plac Defilad.

So isn't this the same as a modern art museum? Maybe the two organizations should combine.

it's a museum of contemporary art, slight distinction but relevant.
