Air-photo off Warsaw´s historic core taken during the last weeks of the Warsaw Uprising (Most likely in the second half of september 1944, after the Nazi-german deliberate destruction of the historic district of Warsaw: New town, Old town, Royal castle, Krakowskie przedmiescie, Theatre square, etc...)

The Saxon palace and Bruhl Palace are still standing more or less "untouched" by the Uprising.

Revitalization of Warsaw's Public Realm

Warsaw has not only been busy revitalizing its old squares (Grzybowski, Pilsudski, Malachowski) and parks (Krasinki, Lazienki, Wilanow) but most notable recently it has begun to revitalize its streets with the return of ground floor retail in many locations. Just a few pics for now, but I will have more shortly.

Pre-war Warsaw streets teemed with life fed by ubiquitous stores and shopfront style display windows. This is coming back finally decades after the communists banned bourgeous private enterprise:

Palace on the Water in Lazienki Park under restoration. If ever visiting Warsaw, visiting this place is a must, the interiors and furnishings are amazing an authentic period piece:

It is standing, covered with grey plaster of "baranek" type.

Regarding pics of post-war "apartment problem" (and people living in half-destroyed rent houses) - there are nice pics of small children kept on leash so that they won't fall from 5th floor

Admittedly it's post-war socialist realist from the 1st floor up, but it is a reconstruction of a pre-war building with original basement and original first floow from 1862. I had to post this restoration (thanks Cyran) because it exemplifies the quality of early socreal and its urban character and how well it marries with pre-war construction. The building will have a ground floor now that in capitalist times relates to and enriches street life:

pre-war:
