no idea where that lion is. I'm assuming the model is in the Warsaw History Museum, which I believe is still closed...I mean the one on the old town square. I know the renovated basements are open though.

Saski Palace Reconstruction

http://warszawa.gazeta.pl/warszawa/1...html#LokWawTxt

A preliminary, but concrete proposal has been put forth by a group of developers at the behest of the Saski 2018 organization. Serious discussions between the city and developers are about to begin.

The current status of this project is as follows:
  • Residents are for reconstruction;
  • City council has voted in favour of reconstruction;
  • Planning approvals exist and are still valid;
  • Archeological excavations have been completed and valuable components have been identified that will need to be incorporated into a modified project;
  • The version of the Saski Palace to be rebuilt has been agreed to;
  • A detailed architectural project is in place and approved, but will require minor modifications to reflect archeological findings;
  • A detailed study commissioned by the city has determined the most appropriate function for the reconstructed palace, Bruhl palace and mansions along Krolewska Street, that is the new seat of the City Hall, which would save the city 25 mln zloties annually in rental fees;
  • Financial and other details based on the private developers business plan are yet to be revealed;

Theoretically, if negotiations are successful reconstruction could begin later this year.

I will keep you posted....

the current city hall is actually scattered around the city, with the main seat at Plac Bankowy, however this building needs to be returned to its rightful owners soon:

This is not a done deal yet, but there is a very strong interest in rebuilding this part of the city's historic fabric at the heart of Poland really, but the problem has been money. Now there may be a funding solution that would work and won't require burdening taxpayers and going into debt.

Exciting and unexpected news.

By the way, who "owns" that building above?

Now I'm suspicious. Who the hell could own this vast building besides the government?

Actually, I think I made a mistake about that building on Plac Bankowy, but there are other buildings that house city offices that have to be returned to their rightful owners. I think this one probably needs massive updating. It was restored in 1949-54 by Warsaw's uber- architect Piotr Bieganski.

^ I really like what they are doing with some of the streets of Srodmiescie and framing them with buildings. The "Za Zelazna Brama" apartments are truly a mess to deal with from an urban planning perspective. And, the interiors are awful too.

No, but I visited a family friend's son that moved into the apartment after inheriting it. The actual apartment unit was small but functional, however, the lack of balcony and natural light made it seem really cramped. The worst part was the interior of the actual apartment building - narrow, oddly arranged and the elevators were frightening. Apparently, they function terribly and most residents take the stairs on the regular. Can you imagine doing that daily when living on the 14th floor?

The building on Plac Bankowy is not to be returned to the descendents of the pre-war owners nor is too worn-out for the city hall but, simply, it is not owned by the city of Warsaw. The city of Warsaw subleases the offices there from the province governor (wojewoda).

This is one of the reasons why a new city hall is needed. Saski Palace!
