Would be nice. But there is 20-feet-deep water inside. Most of the bricks, especially in the lower parts, are completely rotten, they have to be replaced. Actually, only the carcass might be (and I am not sure if it really is) in good shape. The buildings are neglected for over 40 years. Costs of refurbishment would be enormous, the new function (similar to large gas tanks in Vienna, turned into lofts, IIRC - hardly profitable).

Sorry, I am pessimist.

can't wait to see that movie, would be amazing to see the city as it was and thanks to cgi not just a few tight vignettes.

Interesting that the design slopes down from the river, before rising up towards the castle. Wonder if that's an old canal route or moat? Or is that just part of the design?

it's actually an optical illusion, I did a few double-takes on it too. It does indeed slope up with a little bump.

Restoration of Prozna Street continues along with the restoration of the 2nd last "ruin" on this street at 14 Prozna. Meanwhile an old substandard building further down the street is being pulled down to make way for a new development that will hopefully create a more appropriately scaled street face.

Reminds of the time I hired a plumber in Krakow and the guy came dressed for a night of nightclubbing, but he did a very good job...it's the Polish way.

You're romanticising. The most reasonable explanation is that people shown on photographs are not in their best outfits, but in their only outfits.

It's hard to imagine today, how poverty was widespread in 1940s and 50s. For example Miron Białoszewski describes, how he worked in the newspaper soon after the war. His manager was woman, whose husband had outfit made from cardboard (!).

I agree Mruczek, the poverty in Poland postwar was unbelievable, the country was pushed back into the stone age materially. What wasn't destroyed in places like Warsaw and plundered by the Nazis was stolen by Soviets in the post war period. These were incredibly resourceful people with amazing spirit many of whom were called Robinsons because they lived in urban caves (unsafe ruins of buildings) in Warsaw for years after the war while standing in food lines for their meals and spending years sifting through ruins or engaged in some way in the reconstruction effort.

Cardboard?

You actually believe that?

I'm trying to imagine someone wearing cardboard clothing. Hey, Lady Gaga once wore a meat dress but cardboard?

How long before some sort of shelter was given to the residents returning to this city after the war? Were there temporary camps, etc.?
