Late Winter in Downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota

March 5, 2011

Since yesterday was such a beautiful winter day, I decided to head over to downtown St. Paul to snap some shots. Much of downtown was torn up to make way for the new Central Corridor LRT project, so it was impossible to avoid the construction. Regardless, I still think of St. Paul as the prettier, more historic of the twins.

Nice photos! The 1st National Bank building has always been one of my favorites, with the iconic 1 looming on the skyline.

Hopefully you'll wander over to Lowertown for your next DT SP thread.

Thanks for the nice comment, Todd! I was a tad disappointed with my photo tour this time around, but I still think it turned out nicely.

I definitely agree about the 1st National Bank Building; it's an under-appreciated beauty. If you look really closely, there are some gorgeous Art Deco details running all the way up the building. I just love all of the Art Deco in St. Paul.

I was hoping to throw Lowertown into the mix for this tour as well, but it was getting too dark by the time I headed that way. Next time, for sure.

I think we are in an awkward light period or something. The photos I have taken this week are some of the weakest I've done in a long time.

Thanks, Som! A big factor in my disappointment is that I only took my telephoto lens. It's virtually impossible to get larger buildings at any reasonable distance with a 50-200mm. I guess I'm going to have to carry multiple from now on.

Jen, you should get a Lowepro camera backpack. I absolutely love mine. I've had it for about 13 years now and it pretty much goes anywhere I go and is still in great shape. They're kind of expensive, but they totally last and are way convenient. Mine holds 3 lenses, all of my filters and some have a tripod strappy thing, mine doesn't but a cool idea nevertheless.

Anyway, great job. I always enjoy a photo thread of the Twins! Or just St. Paul in this case.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I should really invest in a new case. I've got a standard camera case, but it doesn't hold multiple lenses, and I hate to carry around something so clunky.

At any rate, I'll probably be heading back to get what I missed in the coming weekends, so stay tuned!

I have a camera shoulder bag, I find it to be pretty convenient for carrying around multiple lenses. Also it makes it easy to put the camera away when that seems appropriate. I don't remember what I paid for it but it was pretty cheap, I got it at National Camera Excange in downtown Minneapolis.

Very nice pic set! Thanks Jennifat for deviating from your small city photo tour to give us a look of St Paul. My fav is pic three of the set, the loner guy sitting on the park bench in the middle of snow. To me that is a true Minnesotan!

The city looks really nice with all those great buildings and smiling happy people. My hometown has the nickname "smilets by" meaning city of smiles or the smiling city ..but as far as I can see all you guys in Saint Paul look pretty happy too Greetings from your friends in EU

Thanks, Aarhus. I think the biggest reason people were smiling that day was due to the fact that it was above freezing.

My objective when creating photo threads is to capture ordinary moments in cities and towns to convey their "look-and-feel", not particularly focusing just on infrastructure. I like to add a human element to my tours.

Fantastic photo thread, as always. Despite your regrets, the telephoto worked great to capture the personal life moments that are all-too-often missed in these types of city threads. You're way better at it than I am.

I also use a Lowepro shoulder bag (Slingshot 100AW). It's not a cumbersome bag, the sling factor is fantastic and the padding is good. The only time I have trouble with it is on long hikes with a tripod hanging off it. The single shoulder strap tends to be weighty, even with carbon fiber (the tripod, that is). It holds my camera body with telephoto + 50mm and 18-55 stock (plus flash & filters). REI sells these bags and if you're a member (you should be), you can return it at ANY time if you don't like it, no questions asked.
