PORTSMOUTH | Mary Rose - New Ship Hall & Museum | U/C

http://www.maryrose.org/new_museum/index.html
http://www.wilkinsoneyre.com/project...egory=cultural

A new museum designed by Wilkinson Eyre to house the Mary Rose which will for the first time allow the ship to be displayed alongside the wealth of items discovered with it. A highly complex structure bridging not only the in situ ship, enclosed within its carefully regulated 'hot box', but also the grade 1 listed dry dock in which she sits. The museum is due to open in Autumn 2012 with the existing 'hot box' remaining in place until 2016, when the final drying phase of the ships preservation is due to complete. This will then be removed and visitors will be able to enter the ship hall and view the ship without having to peer through the smeary perspex and mist of old.

I am shocked at the lack of interest in this. A hugely importany national heritage project!

And don't forget the massive new development at Fort Nelson. Can't wait till that is done.

Nothing to see yet. I think there'll be plenty of interest when there's something t film.

Good question.
As far as i can gleen its a complete refurb of exhibition spaces and a new gallery to display the larger pieces which have until now been housed in a tent on the parade ground + some sort of visitor centre/reception space. It is apparently U/C. Not a project which is particularly easy to find info on it has to be said.

Which makes me wonder why it isn't a requirement of the heritage lottery fund et al that these projects should make a bit of effort to show to the public what's going on with lottery cash and at least set up decent websites with plans ect. The Mary Rose website is seriously bad.

Nice to see that HMS Driftwood is going to be kept in something other than a tent

The two photos above show how the new structure is built within the footprint of the remaining ship hall and then the old supporting structure has been removed.

In related news the top half of Victory's masts are soon to be removed for the first time since WW2 as part of the massive restoration project just getting underway on her.
