yeah. it depends on the level of the land under the sea where it reaches land too... the shallower the land underwater is the greater the wave at that point... so at sendai it was 14m which is 45 feet! elsewhere it's been more, and at other places less.

I have heard from my mate (who is in North Tokyo so quite a distance a way). He felt it, it also broke his TV and Toaster.

It just goes to show how well prepared Japan actually is, this should have been far worse but Japan spends the money maintaining its infastructure and preparing for these events. We can learn.

"8,000 times more powerful than the quake which hit Christchurch in NZ"

Is what was just reported on BBC News.

But it didn't hit Japan directly. The Christchurch quake was so destructive because it's epicentre(?) was so near the city.

Some expert analysis from 'am123' on there:

"We are in what the Bible calls the end times, the most tumultuous times the earth has ever known. Look around at what is happening. My advice to one and all is do not get caught up in the destruction brought about by the anger of the LORD. Do not get caught up in the destruction brought about by the Devil, who is angry for he knows his time is short. And do not get caught up in the destruction of the birth pains of Christ's soon return (the earthquakes, the floods, the wicked storms, etc).

A few years ago, the tsunami hit Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation. Katrina hit New Orleans right before they were going to celebrate their gay mardi gras. And we see the recent earthquake that hit Haiti, a nation where 50% of the people practice voodoo, and all these other earthquakes. God is bringing down everything that is not of Him. Leave Babylon now, do not partake in her punishment (Revelation 18:4)! Make the way to Mount Zion (Psalm 2:6), home of the living God, while you still can—for time is short! Only in Jesus will you find refuge from what is coming over the heavens and the earth (see Psalm 91 and Psalm 2). Seek Jesus (to see how read my profile) and you will find Him. Seek Him not and survive not—the choice is up to you."

He's obviously cleared the whole matter up.

I have a friend staying out in Yamagata, about 30 odd miles from Fukushima, where the nuclear situation is. Would love to be able to contact him to find out what is happening, but i'd imagine power must be down given the amount of generation plant they have shut down. Really hope they get the nuclear plant situation under control- it would be a catastrophic if something were to go wrong there on top of all the disasters today. Getting home from work and seeing the pictures... they really are horrific.

Ministerial warning now that a radiation leak could occur at the nuclear plant.

By the way watched this last year:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Magnitude_8.0

Fictional though as the Japanese Earthquake rating system only goes upto 7, todays earthquake was rated at Shindo 7 at origin, 5 in Tokyo and 6 in other parts of the country.

*precisely* the same thing would have happened to me if I tried it in my office Will. I do sometimes wonder if we work in the same place but just never realised?

Earthquakes like this happen all the time, so there's no need to jump to absurd conclusions and make links where none exist.

When last I heard, the UK was not located in a zone known for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Last japanese earthquake of this strength was 1200 years ago. We also have more earthquakes in this country than most places in the world they are just very small.
