Aedas completes eye-catching new performing arts venue is Singapore

The design for the Star Performing Arts Centre has opened up all elevations to encourage air movement through the volume. The design explores how the heated surfaces on the southern elevation and roof can induce wind flow from the shaded, northern face through covered outdoor spaces. This air movement can be mechanically assisted if necessary. Glazing on the southern is minimised and protected by sunshading. The majority of the main lobby glass is facing East but also protected with an external bridge acting as a large sun shade.

The civic and public components of the Star Performing Arts Centre were paramount and outwardly expressed. The south elevation is completely opened up presenting the inner workings of the facility as a 'visible section'. The mass of the theatre floating above is faceted, cut with glass and utilises titanium cladding. All of this helps dissolve and break down the mass, playing with a composition of positive and negative readings.

The building is intended to be an organic object which is open to public discovery. One can crawl under, move through, transverse around and climb onto the complex through a series of ramps, escalators, terraces and public gardens. All circulation, movement and internal forms are soft and sinuous as if the civic activities have polished the inside of the urbanely presented strong faceted exterior.

A new theme park on Sentosa where children can role play in different jobs in their own miniature city will open in 2015.

Called Kidzania, the $90 million park will allow children aged four to 14 to "work" in a local bank, transport company or hospital. They will be able to pretend to be police officers, doctors, journalists and postmen among other professions.

The idea behind the theme park is to inculcate children with values such as hard work and punctuality through play. Doing their jobs well will earn them "money" which they can then use in the "city" to for example buy food.

The park will also be have a Singaporean flavour to it with the theme park management KidZanie Singapore working with local companies. KidZanie Singapore is a collaboration between Mexican company KidZania and Malaysia's Themed Attractions and Resorts.

Karl Lagerfeld to design emblem of new Sofitel So Singapore

herworldPLUS
Tuesday, Jan 29, 2013

As part of its expansion into Asia, luxury hotel chain Sofitel has commissioned fashion’s most famous polymath Karl Largerfeld to design the emblem of its new Sofitel So Singapore hotel.

According to Sofitel, the new emblem will “symbolise the hotel’s new and original style, unique to Sofitel So Singapore, and appear on a range of exclusive objects available for clients during their stay”.

Everyone in the fashion industry knows who Karl Lagerfeld is; and practically everyone who’s not involved in the industry is also aware that the “Kaiser” as he’s known is a living fashion and design legend.

“I am very proud to announce this inspirational collaboration, which is a perfect illustration of Sofitel Luxury Hotels’ ambitions with regard to excellence and elegance. His exceptional creativity and talent will confer on our emblem the ultimate touch of refinement and enhance our concept,” said Robert Gaymer-Jones, CEO of Sofitel Luxury on the partnership with Largerfeld who is currently the chief creative director for Chanel and Fendi among many other positions.

Sofitel public relations said the new hotel for Singapore will combine “the iconic Sofitel ‘art de vivre’ [the art of living] with a signature of an international designer from the worlds of fashion or art to present the best of the location”.

This isn’t the first time Sofitel has reached out to the fashion community to add a touch of style to its properties; one of Japan’s found fathers of fashion Kenzo Takada – yes, that Kenzo – created the design direction for the Sofitel So Mauritius and Christian Lacroix did the same for the Sofitel So Bangkok.

The new Sofitel So Singapore will be located at 35 Robinson Road in a heritage building built in 1927 as a government telecommunications and postal department. The neo-classical facade will be retained and a new, five-storey wing is also being added. There will be 134 guestrooms, 23 of which will be suites, and each room will be unique; the hotel is slated to open in mid-2013.

Sofitel So Singapore at 35 Robinson Road is scheduled to open in mid-2013. For more information about Sofitel’s So boutique hotels, go to eu.soboutique.com.
