JFK is UNBELIEVABLY bad! I had a nightmare there in 2011!
Best=? Maybe Frankfurt. I like SVO. The new terminal (is it D?) is great.

Out of a lot that i have been too i really like SVO. No i am not biased but everything is close and the smoking areas are widely available.

LAX is way to plain for such a big airport. Poor choice of dining.

JFK is just a ****hole.

AMS (Schiphol) is pretty decent.

From the ones I've used (146 airports so far):

The best:

SIN (my favorite airport - efficient, clean, great terminal design, competent staff)
HKG (great layout, clean, delays are very rare)
HEL (best airport in Europe - clean, bright and perfect for connections)
CPH (very efficient airport)

The worst:

ALY (corrupt police officers, very dirty, hopelessly incompetent staff)
CCU (without a doubt the worst 10+ million pax airport in the world)
CDG (connections are a nightmare, staff refuses to speak English and the organization is a mess)
DUB (my only visit was prior to the opening of the new terminal and back then it was the most chaotically crowded airport I've ever been to)

my experience.

Good:
Singapore (clean, friendly staff, easy to navigate)
San Francisco
Durban (modern airport, very clean)
Capetown (modern airport, very clean)
Amsterdam (easy for transfers)
Frankfürt (easy for transfers)
Toronto (modern airport, very clean)
Cork (small airport but very modern)

It's okay:
Dubai (modern and clean airport, but to much walking!)
Dallas (modern and clean as well)
Milan (very outdated)
Los Angeles

Worst:
London Heatrow (it's a maze)
Paris CDG (unfriendly Gerdarmeries!, not easy to navigate)
Jakarta (outdated)

LAX is horrid, especially if you need to change terminals --- you must journey outside (out of security zone) on to an ugly narrow crowded and chaotic sidewalk, hardly wider than those in a suburban street, past a crush of skycaps, people being dropped offs, confused tourists and piles of luggage. Third rate all around -- even the food is crappy fast food chains.

I love my hometown airport, Washington DC's Reagan National Airport. Good layout, pleasing architecture, and excellent access from the subway as well as the local highways.

I haven't really traveled through enough airports to make a definitive list from best to worst, so I'll just list some random likes/dislikes.

Miami - Hate it. Awful layout - have to go in and out of security multiple times. Need to shlep luggage over long distances. Customs and airport security is nasty.

Kansas City - Airport was designed for maximum convenience for cars, but unfortunately opened just before the advent of airport security. Very short walking distance from roadway to gate, but requires individual security entry points for each gate. This can mean long waits to enter due to limited security staff, and you need to go outside again if you realize you need to go to the bathroom or want to eat or buy a magazine - and then re-enter. But the floor is cool.

Madrid/Bajaras - Nice except for access from subway (Terminals 1, 2, 3). The three terminals are arranged in a semi-circle, and the metro station is in the middle - equidistant from all, but convenient to none, about 800 m walk. Two transfers required on trip to center of town. Terminal 4 is beautiful.

Paris/Charles De Gaulle - 15-minute bus trip from gate to International Arrivals Terminal. Not the best way to enter Europe.

Hong Kong/Kai Tak - I traveled through the old airport in 1995, three years before it closed. Certainly not state-of-the-art but awesome in its own way. Approach was incredible. And the "plane parking lot" was also a powerful experience - right in the middle of about 40 airliners arriving or departing - and an awesome nighttime view of the skyline of Central.

New York/JFK - I returned from an overseas trip here in 1993. The International Arrivals Terminal was simply awful - a dingy, cramped basement with worn-out carpeting and mildewed ceiling tiles. I understand it's been replaced since then, but I was embarrassed for my country when I suffered through it back then.

La Paz/El Alto, Bolivia - I've traveled through here several times. The negative is having to adjust to an altitude of 4,150 m (13,450 feet) above sea level on arrival - obviously no fault of the designers. Only 61% the air of sea level.

Terminal F is pretty bad. The departures area is too crowded by duty free shops. Terminal D is nice though.

I agree with this one. And for the worst airport, they name it NAIA terminal 1, Philippines. See this link http://www.frommers.com/slideshow/in...=AIRFARE#slide

That's based on the "Guide to Sleeping in Airports" website. Not very authoritative if you ask me.

The worst airport I have been too is Milan Malpensa. The last I used it was in 2006, so not sure if it has improved since then. For an international airport none of its signage was in English. Also the terminal was very old and major crowding around the gates.

My favorite is SIN but I love travelling through FRA to see all the different aircraft. DXB is also nice.

I've passed through allot of bad airports but the majority are very small such as the airports serving many of the Greek islands.

The worst major airport I have ever used is probably Miami.
