How will Etihad's purchase of Alitalia affect Alitalia's membership in Skyteam? I see on Wikipedia that Etihad considers its stakes in other carriers as "Etihad Equity Alliance". Am I wrong or they are not part of any of the larger alliances? And what will be the relationship with AirFrance after Etihad's purchase of a 49% stake in Alitalia?

Well, EY's stake in AB hasn't gotten people speculating the latter's exit from OneWorld, so....

Will Etihad do a bacon sandwich for that price? I didn't think so.

tullamarine I don't think Etihad (or Emirates for that matter) will do a bacon sandwich at any price!!! Qantas customers on Sydney/Melbourne-London lost bacon from the breakfast menu following the Emirates alliance.

BaconButty I finally understand the true horrors of globalization.

So the new AZ(Alitalia SAI- 49% owned by Etihad(EY)) has now taken off. There will be additions both short and long-term to the long-haul fleet. What aircraft do you expect them to sign/should they sign? My dream is for them to have the 787 or the A350 of some sort. They deserve them.

I would go for the B787, especially if both Alitalia and Etihad want to own them. AZ could then retire its B767-300ERs in favor of that more modern aircraft over time, while Etihad could bolster its long-haul fleet with that one. The A350 could also be a good order, too, but it is up for the airlines to decide.

Not to mention Emirates partnership with Qantas which is still part of the OneWorld alliance.

I agree and it would look sweet in that livery. The airline operates A330s and Boeing 777-200 ERs and according to another source they are due something like 3 777s of an unspecified model (not sure about -200ER's not many available with GE engines on the used market and if new Boeing would offer the LR version instead at the same price and the -300ER seems too big for the routes they operate) and 4 A330s in the near future all sourced through Etihad.

For me it is the 787 for the long-term- I could see them operating a mixed fleet of -8s and -9s. Engines of course would be the same as Etihad's for commonality and economies of scale thus GENX.

Oh ok. I fondly remembered AZ having that aircraft type for a long time, which were replaced by the A330-200. But, a fleet expansion with the B787 to replace some of the older B777-200ERs may be needed to enhance flight ops.

Yes several in the Americas( meaning North, South, Central you name it) as well as China, Africa, the Mediterranean area(narrowbodies will be used) and of course feeding into the Abu Dhabi(AUH) hub from up to seven or eight different Italian airports located across the country. Traffic to the Indian Sub-Continent, the Eastern portion of Africa, South East-Asia and Australasia will be routed through AUH. Hope this helps.

When should these new routes start? 2015? 2016?

It depends on when AZ will get the new aircraft. Hopefully, the new flights will include a flight resumption to San Francisco and making its flight to Los Angeles into a year-round service.
