My Place Development | Ferensway | Hull | 4 Fl | Cancelled

The My Place development is a state of the art youth centre consisting of a music studio, juice bar, café, office space and a performing venue. The design is some would say contraversial and is sure to host some good discussions.

I am a bit sceptical over how it will look in 10-20 years time. Look at Crown House next door and you have a building that will probably look just as good in 50 years as it does now. Buildings like that never go out of fashion.

I couldn't say the same for this building, but to be fair i also dread to think how St Stephens will look in 50 years.

Sorry to be a pain with my emails but I emailed surface architects:

Quote:
I do hope Humber Quays will be built at some point.*

On MyPlace, the green element is formed from perforated painted metal panels.*

I think the arrangement of 3 'boxes' of varying sizes with the stretchy green form between them is interesting.*

There are other black buildings in the area, so this creates something of a theme in the area. We have then contrasted the black with a very bright and fresh green. As such I think the building will fit in very well and also be unique and positive.*

Response to the designs have been extremely positive around the country. It will be essential that the quality of the design is carried through in detail.*

We believe that the building will be an asset to the city.*

Kind regards

Richard Scott
Tis will probably look good as it is bound to have the same quality about it as there other designs. Shame that it will be green metal and not transparent material.

Sitting on the fence on this one, I just can not quite decide if this is shambolic design or a masterpiece.

Which is not a bad thing as there are paintings and art that have drawn the same conclusions from me but they are often the pieces I have spent the most time looking at and pondering over.

These sort of designs rarely look like the initial renders once built. This could easily go one of 2 ways IMO - design classic aka The Deep or carbuncle aka Premier Inns River Hull. Anyway I believe it got to get past the planning committee yet!

Agree with Legolamb about the architect being a real plus point - I've just explored the website and they've got some cracking designs...however, for me, this specific design doesn't grab me. Compared to their other projects where their frontages impose on their surrounding landscape with striking angles, colours and large windows (see Lock House / Fruit Market proposals / Avon Northampton) and have a real presence about them, My Place seems bland in colour, dominated by a vast number of small rectangular windows with a lack of angle variation...I think I'd rather wait for a better design to be re-submitted for this prime site, especially after the disappointment of the St. Stephens Hotel just up the road. Also, although I like the Hull Truck and consider its dark clad quite sleek, I do question the logic in having so much dark colour on one street.

Again I agree with you I still think something brighter and with more angles would be best for that site. Although it's a nice design I think it's the wrong area.

I'm not sure hull city council planners will pass this due to the way it looks out of place. What does everyone else think? Do you think the planners pass this?

It is interesting that, with the arrival of the new Middlesbrough MyPlace Project, we now have THREE MyPlace projects being built in this region, and being monitored on three of our four forums . . .

NEWCASTLE - MyPlace Youth Centre & City Pool | Newcastle | 2fl | Proposed
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1083871

HULL AND HUMBER - My Place Development | Ferensway | Hull | 4 Fl | Proposed
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1341619

TEESSIDE - Myplace (ex Custom House) Refurbishment | Middlesbrough | 2fl | U/C
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1358499

. . . and all three are very different buildings and projects!

The Myspace organisation must be getting some decent funding to get these up and running , the Middlesbrough one alone is costing £4m ,and includes a Theatre with a capacity of 150+.

The Hull one looks like a interesting building

This project went before planners today and was recommended conditional approval, the outcome is unsure at the min, I reckon this will pick up a few design complaints.

Was they also looking to get lottery funding? I know hulls is pretty much go ahead if lottery funding is secured.

Also with all respect those plans are not very interesting at all!

Surprised that Hull's is a new build actually, considering Newcastle and Middlesboro's are conversions. Could have brought back the Edwin Davis building. Though after seeing somewhere there a few weeks back, my girlfriend's uncle saw a few people inside it last week doing something.

Looks like something taken out of a sci-fi videogame, but I think It could potentially look really cool

It looks like this is about to be scrapped, labour have cut the funding (4.4m) for this project and the last efforts of gaining funding through other sources have failed. Also the government has stopes backing this scheme, So I expect something soon

Noooo! was looking forward to seeing this fill a gap in the steet and add to the modern transformation taking place along Ferensway. So the council has pulled funding?
