Lao Airlines pursuing Singapore route

Lao Airlines may launch a Vientiane-Singapore route before the end of 2011, according to Sengpraseuth Mathouchanh, the company’s deputy director general. Sengpraseuth told Vientiane Times that the company is negotiating the purchase or lease of an Airbus A320 to service the route.

“We plan to launch the Vientiane-Singapore route at the end of this year, but whether we put the plan into action depends on whether we can procure the aircraft,” he told the newspaper. “Our management plans to travel to France in middle of this month to negotiate to buy or lease the plane.”

Lao Airlines ready to lease A320s

June 2, 2011

PAKSE, 2 June 2011 – Lao Airlines is sourcing two A320s to expand its regional network to China and Singapore an official reported during the Mekong Tourism Forum last week.

Lao Airlines vice president, Saengprasert Matujun, made the announcement at the gala dinner of Mekong Tourism Forum, 27 May at the Champasak Cultural Hall.

He confirmed Lao Airlines was in discussions with Airbus to strike a deal for two A320 aircraft that would enable it to launch services to regional destinations — Guangzhou in China and Singapore.

Mr Saengprasert in an interview with TTR Weekly said the carrier and Airbus were in negotiations to finalise a short-term lease for the first A320s, which could join the fleet as early as this October.

“The airline wants to buy two new aircraft, but delivery could not be before 2014 so in the meantime we will go for two leased aircraft,” said Mr Saengprasert.

The two aircraft will be deployed on routes two new destinations –Singapore and Guangzhou, three weekly services each.

The 150- seat Airbus 320 will also be used to boost capacity on the Bangkok, Hanoi and Siem Reap routes replacing the 70-seat ATR-72 for some of the flights.

This will allow the airline to increase ATR flights to domestic destinations such as Luang Prabang, Udomxay and Xieng Khouang during the high season.

Earlier, Lao Airlines placed an order for two Chinese-made Comac’s ARJ21-700s. These aircraft will roll out in 2012. The 90-seater aircraft (one-class configuration) will be used on domestic routes as well as some secondary regional destinations currently served by ATRs.

Now the carrier operates eight aircraft – four ATR72s and four MA-60s.

In addition to the two new regional destinations, Mr Saengprasert said the airline was studying the potentiality of a new Savannakhet-Danang route. Based on the outcome of feasibility studies, it could launch a service early next year.

There are possibilities too for a service to Seoul, but first it will require ratification of air service agreement between Laos and the South Korean government.

This is not first time that Lao Airlines has leased an A320. In early 2003 it changed its name from Lao Aviation to Lao Airlines and leased one of the 150-seat aircraft from Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise.

It was the first and only jet in the airline’s fleet and was flown by Vietnam Airlines pilots with the Vietnamese national airline providing maintenance.

The acquisition of the Airbus A320 was flagged a turning point that would lead to the airline’s privatisation. At the same time it discarded its dated logo and used the A320 to launch a new brighter logo and livery colours that are still in use.

The aircraft flew services to Bangkok, Hanoi and Chiang Mai, but the honeymoon with jet aviation lasted just six months when crippled by rising costs the airline was forced to return the aircraft to the lease firm.

At the time, the airline considered flying to Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, but plans went sour as did the relationship with Vietnam Airlines and a team of consultants supplied by Air France.

Laos to develop tourism on Mekong River islands

Vientiane, Laos - Laos has announced plans to develop three islands on the Mekong River as 'green resorts' for visitors to its capital Vientiane, media reports said Monday.

The city Planning and Investment Department was to encourage private investments in hotels and other facilities on the river islands of Xingxou, Sangkhi and Kangkhong.

The aim was to develop the sites 'as green resorts offering relaxation and water sport activities such as jet skiing and fishing,' the Vientiane Times reported.

The islands are currently used to grow vegetables and cash crops to supply the city.

Xingxou island would require investment of about 120 million dollars, while Sangkhi and Kangkhong need an estimated 10 million each, the government mouthpiece said.

Laos has previously granted foreign investors permission to develop tourist facilities on Mekong River islands in Don Chan district of Vientiane and another in the north-western province of Bokeo.

Developing river island resorts could attract more international tourists to Vientiane, the capital's planning department said.

Last year, an estimated 2 million foreign tourists visited Laos and more than 2.2 million are expected this year.

Vientiane boasts 37 official tourist sites such as Buddhist temples, and currently around 320 hotels and guesthouses and 70 restaurants.

Laos forecasts trade surplus in 2012

Jun 9, 2011, 5:07 GMT

Vientiane - The Lao government has forecast a trade surplus of about 200 million dollars for the next fiscal year after notching up deficits for decades, state media reported Thursday.

According to a draft of the 2011-2012 national socio-economic development plan, Lao exports will reach 1.6 billion dollars in the fiscal year beginning on October 1, while imports will hit 1.4 billion dollars, the Vientiane Times reported.

Laos, a communist country, has suffered trade deficits for decades.

During the first six months of this fiscal year Laos reported a trade deficit of 211 million dollars.

Laos' main exports include gold, copper and electricity

The government expects that electricity output will increase 37 per cent in the next fiscal year, with the majority of it destined for export, while the value of mining products is expected jump 49 per cent year on year.

Next year's gross domestic product is expected to grow 8.5 per cent, the newspaper said.

The plate isn't clear, but looks like the number is in the middle, while other car, the number is toward the bottom with some text on the top.

Cambodia beat Laos 4-2 in World Cup qualifier first leg
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/index.p...first-leg.html

A sensational second half blitz saw Cambodia bounce back from a first half one-goal deficit to record a commanding 4-2 victory over Laos in the first leg of their FIFA World Cup Asian Group first round qualifier at Olympic Stadium yesterday.

A stunning free kick ten minutes into the game by Laos midfielder Phomsouvanh Monolom triggered an eerie silence in the stands but a crowd of well over 10,000 erupted in wild celebrations as the Cambodian strike force of Khuon Laboravy, Kuoch Sokumpheak and substitute Sam El Nasa came out of the trenches and kept hitting the target.

In a complete shake up of the first half script, the home side adopted a refreshingly bold approach as Laboravy gained free access into the shot box to beat Laos goalkeeper Chintana Souksavath six minutes after the break. The equaliser clearly shifted the momentum in favour of Cambodia, and moments later Sam El Nasa streamed through the back line and clipped the ball round Chintana to fire his side into the lead

The visitors responded with another top notch set piece conversion by Phomsouvanh to level the scores, but within minutes Kouch Sokumpheak capped off a fleet-footed dash into the box with a deft finish to haul the home side to the front again.

With the seconds ticking away in the fixture, Sokumpheak conveyed a neat cutback to the fast advancing Sam El Nasa, who gleefully deflected the ball in for his well-deserved brace.

A last ditch header by hard working midfielder Vongchiengkham Soukaphone sailed over the bar confirming Cambodia’s two-goal advantage ahead of this Sunday’s return leg in Vientiane.

Cambodia head coach Lee Tae Hoon cautioned at the post match press conference that the contest was far from over, with plenty of work needed to be done before the second leg. “Yes, I am happy with the scoreline, but there are still lot of problems and defence is one of them,” he said.

“For example we conceded those two crucial free kicks which Laos turned into goals. With a little tact by our defenders we could have avoided them. We tend to give away possession quite easily and I want to work on this aspect.”

South Korean born Lee revealed his half time pep talk had resonated well within his team. “At the break I told the players don’t look back at what happened. Win or lose go for it. Be more positive and try to avoid long passes,” he said.

“It’s all about confidence and you need to regain that as quickly as you can.”

The coach added he was pleased to see his tactics alter the balance on the pitch.

“I had to take out Tum Saray early because I saw him come under a lot of pressure and he was seemingly overawed by the occasion. So I replaced him with Sam El Nasa, who is a smart player and an experienced one.”

Casting a glance towards Sunday’s second leg, the coach noted that “playing away is always tough for any side,” adding: “we need to do our best.”

Laos head coach Hans-Peter Schaller, meanwhile, admitted his side made it too easy for Cambodia to score. “You cannot make so many individual mistakes and still hope for a better result than this,” he said.

“We play at the same level and the result was no surprise to me. Even I felt it was not too bad if it were to be 3-2, but 4-2 is giving away a lot.

The 48-year-old Austrian blamed his “very young and inexperienced team” for the loss. “In fact, we missed out on as many as six key players including a couple of good defenders and a good striker. Its all about confidence and some of them are playing here for the first time.

“When you begin to lose confidence you begin to make a lot of errors and that is what happened with some of my players today,” he added.

“If we cannot beat Cambodia at home, we are not good enough. It is tough, but we will give our best in the second leg.”

The winner over the two legs will advance to the second round where they will face China in a further set of matches on July 23 and 28.

In the four other Asian group first legs yesterday that had completed by time of print, Nepal recorded a 2-1 home win over Timor-Leste, Mongolia edged Myanmar 1-0 in Ulan Bator, Sri Lanka and the Philippines ended deadlocked at 1-1 in Colombo, and Palestine grabbed two vital away goals in their 2-0 defeat of Afghanistan.

New Laos airline preparing for takeoff
(AFP) – 1 day ago

HANOI — Laos's first privately-owned airline said Thursday it plans to enter the region's booming aviation market later this year.

Phongsavanh Airlines is aiming for a September takeoff with an initial service to Bangkok, said the carrier's spokesman Viphasouk Saysanavongphet.

"But if not we will definitely begin our service before the end of this year," he told AFP.

Flying from the northern Lao city of Vientiane, the airline is also lining up routes to Hanoi and Siem Reap, he said, putting it in direct competition with flag carrier Lao Airlines.

"We are aiming at serving the ASEAN region to begin with," Viphasouk said, referring to the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Phongsavanh is positioning itself as a "premium low-cost airline", offering business and economy classes, he added.

The airline, with initial registered capital of $9 million, is part of Lao-owned Phongsavanh Group, whose other interests include timber, construction, petroleum and banking.

It says it will start its service with three Boeing 737-400s purchased second-hand, each with a capacity of about 150 passengers.

"But with the competitive market that we have right now, we will be happy with 80-100 passengers per flight to begin with," Viphasouk said.

Asia-Pacific airlines recorded solid growth in 2010 with a strong rebound in passenger numbers, and the region's low-cost segment is particularly booming, industry players say.

Communist Laos remains one of Asia's poorest nations but officially grew at 7.9 percent between 2006 and 2010, largely on the exploitation of natural resources.
