Late Winter in Downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota - Part 2
March 19, 2011
Since I didn't manage to get everything I had planned on my last photo tour, I headed back to St. Paul to see if I could expand on the previous. This is kind of a weird mish-mash of photos, starting downtown, briefly hitting Lowertown, working my way up the hill to the Capitol, and back down again. Probably one of my weakest threads; I'll chalk it up to the dreary weather. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That St. Paul Cathedral is so beautiful. Its an incredible structure from the outside and is even more beautiful - if possible - on the inside. The state Capitol is nice too -- but when you go inside each of them -- the Cathedral blows away the Capitol building in my opinion. Some day I'll have to learn more about the background and history of each. Thanks JF for the photos. They look real nice. The weather doesn't look that bad - as you mentioned at the beginning of your thread. Hopefully a warm, green spring will be arriving soon.

Thanks, GarfieldPark! Indeed, the Cathedral of St. Paul is a beautiful building, both inside and out.
We just got blasted with a major snowstorm today...this winter has been nothing less than cruel. All hope I had for spring has been bitterly squelched. Any of my fellow Minnesotan SSCers feel like screaming like a psychopath, too?

Actually I like this thread a lot. I think I have photographed the same unicycle guy before but it didn't turn out.
This is a great sky:

Thanks, Som. Actually I was walking down Kellogg and there was a group of probably 15 or so unicyclists rolling down the street. That guy was the slowest, fortunately for me.

Nice pictures. That one broad avenue reminds me of Pennsylvania Avenue and other big streets in DC.

Thanks, Matt. I think you're referring to the photo of University Ave. This is the main surface street that connects Minneapolis and St. Paul, and is where the new Central Corridor light rail line will be built. In three years, an LRT train will be rolling down the median!

jennifat, l really enjoyed looking at the photos. i've never gotten into the cities of Minneapolis or st. paul. always exchange planes or have to pick up or drop off at the airport. i love cold weather, and if i ever leave memphis, i would seriously consider minneapolis-st. paul.
the churches and cathedrals (i am assuming at least on is a cathedral) are beautiful. looks like the styles vary, but two or three look as if they might be neo-gothic. i like the orange-red brick on some of the buildings. from pictures that i have seen on 48 hours, i think the police station is probably the prettiest in the country. was one of the domed buildings w/ the symmetrical end buildings the capitol or state house building? it is beautiful, as are the domes w/ the crown and the one that appears to be topped w/ the small steeple and cross. are the tile-like elements on the roof common for the area? obviously, i love parapets, chimney pots, and so many of the architectural elements seen in your photos. seems like there is a good deal glass which appears in the buildings of the area. i make this comment because of the severe cold so much of the year. i am going to check the sticky board for downtown photos of minn and st. paul. perhaps i will be able to read the history of some of these buildings---even, w/ some luck, get a look at the insides, too. once again, i appreciate your photos. kingfish |
