Lille has such beautiful architecture, both modern and historic! I must admit this is a city I've known little about, but it appears to be one of the nicest cities in Europe!

Yes, you right. Unfortunately other cities (London, Paris) eclipse a tad of its qualities. Furthermore, in the region, its title of prefecture was disputed. The city itself is small comparatively at the suburbs (~200 000 inh. for 1 000 000 and more beyond the border), its a three headed metropolis with Roubaix and Tourcoing.
Nevertheless since twenty years Lille conquiers its rightful place in this region (Triangle Paris-London-Benelux) very densely peopled. It's really a busy and commercial city.
Don't forget the Art Nouveau (~1900) patrimony, above all in Lambersart (just north west of the 'Citadelle').
Whoever wants visit Lille must choose the first week-end (plus monday exceptionally holiday) of september for the 'grande braderie' (big clearance sale) when the sidewalks are occupied by stallkeepers or anybody : they sell anything - included antiquities. Go to cafés or restaurants, where you'll eat 'frites' (french fries ) and mussels by bucket ! Because there's a contest to which café will raise the bigger mussels pyramid.

Direction 'rue basse' (antiquities), rue de Bethune, Place Rihour, grand' place and other pedestrian streets.
Drink 'genièvre' and chuchemourette, hundred different beers from our région, names (in french) : http://www.lachope.com/frame_visit.html
Cheeses : 'boule de Lille', favorite cheese of General de Gaulle, Vieux Lille, Maroilles (of course, that stinks !), Dauphin, Boulette d'Avesnes, Mont-des-Cats, etc.
Gastronomy : Chicons (endives is our specialty), courguinoise (crab soup from Calais), waterzooï (fish soup), carbonade flamande (braised spicy beef), lapin aux pruneaux, Pain perdu (stale bread soacks in sugared milk and in whipped eggs next panned, gild, served with sugar or marmelade, num !), tarte au sucre (sugar pie), crèpes à la bière (beer crepe/pancake, with rhum), etc. and always 'moules-frites' (mussels-french fries)

I see more French history in South Carolina from your post. There is a town in South Carolina called Bethune, and we have a crab soup that originated in South Carolina. It is called "She Crab Soup", which has lump crabmeat in it with a cream base and sherry for a little kick. Also....there is a woman where I work named Dauphin. The weekend is here!

Bethune, yes I find on the map. This is at the north east of Columbia, S.C. between Camden and Cheraw, near McBee.
It's amazing !

Dauphin !

That is exactly right. I love maps. I wanted to be a cartographer (I've collected maps since I was a child) or a meteorologist when I was growing up, but alas, my mom made me major in business, so I am a banker. Sigh.

You would like Camden, it was the first inland city founded in South Carolina. Now Camden is a suburb of Columbia, but much of the history remains. Camden, Cheraw, Bethune and McBee are in an area of South Carolina called the sandhills, which were the ancient sand dunes when Columbia was at the beach!

I have been looking at maps and pictures of the area surrounding Lille. The countryside is incredibly green and beautiful. You are lucky to live in such a beautiful area.
