Excellent post and resembelence Akash. How beautiful is that Chandigarh road and with a cycle lane. Well, our city planners all do half hearted work. One person starts it, when another person takes over, he will stop it.

We should start something with full heart. I recently visited New York a week back. They started Bus Lanes to follow the London model. Unfortunately Buses are not running on the Bus Lanes and Cars are being parked on Bus Lanes. No action taken by cops, non caring bus drivers as well, whereas in London it is so strict with red paint on the bus lanes. USA being car dominated country doesn't put similar effort as done in European countries.

Same is the case happening in India. Lot of top officials in Government doesn't see the world from outside, but only from their cars and they want to build a similar scenario as USA. They want to build a Six Lane Expressway to Bangalore Airport which is used only by one category of people, whereas thousands of commuters in Bangalore Railway Station struggle hard to reach
Bus Stand due to series of footover bridges, underpasses.

By the way, here is one design guide for Bicycle Lanes. Chicago Mayor wants to put in 100 miles of cycle track in 4 years during his tenure.

Here is the link

Will any of our Mayor's say that. They are all busy changing their 'Government Provided Cars' from Ambassador to Innova to Honda CRV and so on..

his stretch is a haven for cyclists

Quote:
First cycle track in Mysore comes up on Lalitha Mahal Road

Non-motorised transport, such as cycling, still exists in Mysore, although it is on the wane because of the booming automobile ownership.

With an aim to recreate interest in eco-friendly non-motorised modes of transport, particularly cycling, a dedicated cycle track has been developed in Mysore, which is still considered a cyclist-friendly city.

The first cycle track has come up on Lalitha Mahal Road, which has high traffic density. Work on the 4-km long track has been completed, and will be expanded further.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raykar said the cycling zone or cycle track had been developed on one side of the busy road stretch, making use of the space available after having recently improved the road.

Expansion

He said the track would be expanded from Lalitha Mahal Road till Bannur Road (about 4 km). Later, the track would be developed till Vani Vilas Double Road (4 km). The total length of the track would be around 12 km, he added.

Cyclists have begun using the completed portion of the track, although its official launch is pending. The track has come up along the tall trees on the road, which has heritage buildings nearby.

“The track will be expanded wherever space is available,” Mr. Raykar said, adding that the track would be officially inaugurated shortly.

Cyclists found it difficult to commute on the busy road. With the creation of a cycling zone, a safe path had been created for them, he added.

The MCC had made an attempt to launch ‘cycle tourism' during Dasara a couple of years ago.

The corporation had planned to make cycles available to tourists on hire. It had announced that tourists could return the cycles to the hiring point closest to them after their tour, instead of the place from which they had originally hired the cycle. Representatives from the tourism industry here supported the MCC's plan, and said it would boost tourism. Like bike rentals in Goa, which is hugely popular among tourists there, particularly international tourists, sources in the industry had said that cycle rentals in Mysore “was a step in the right direction to promote bicycles and reduce, at least to some extent, air pollution.”

Renewed interest

Nearly 35 locations had been identified in Mysore, Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens for renting cycles. It was also planned that the renting points would be used as help desks for tourists, for guidance on tourist spots and other information, but lack of funds prevented the corporation from pursuing the project.

MCC sources said the corporation was now showing interest in pursuing the ‘cycle tourism' plan following the development of the city's first cycle track.

The cycle track will be expanded to around 12 km
