SEOUL : Major Cineplex Group Plc has joined with the South Korean cinema business CJ 4Dplex Co to introduce Thailand's first 4D cinema this month in a bid to entice movie lovers back into the theatre.

Advancements in home entertainment systems, widespread piracy and shortening windows between a film's theatrical debut and its DVD or television release have been making it harder to lure people into movie theatres in recent years.

Major chairman Vicha Poolvaraluck said the partnership with the Korean company included a 50-million-baht budget to convert hall No. 5 at Paragon Cineplex into a 180-seat 4D theatre.

Major will provide the physical facilities, while CJ 4Dplex will be responsible for technical support and links with Hollywood film producers. Revenue will be split evenly.

CJ 4Dplex is an independent subsidiary of the Korean conglomerate CJ Group.

In the new cinema, selected 2D and 3D Hollywood blockbusters will be projected onto a special silver screen. Added effects include seat movements, wind, mist, scents, vibrations and leg and back ticklers matched to the action.

Thailand will be the fourth country in the world with 4D cinema, after South Korea, China and Mexico, said Mr Vicha.

Major's 4D theatre will open this month, with Advanced Info Service the official sponsor. Tickets will cost about 400 baht.

"I believe 4D theatre will be the next trend for Thailand's movie industry, and we'll see even more advances in 4D technology," said Mr Vicha. "This deal with CJ 4Dplex will encourage other exhibitors in the region to follow our movement."

Major will gauge audience response before planning more 4D cinemas.

"I think good movie content combined with the latest 4D technology will make the trend a long-lasting one," he said.

Theodore Kim, the chief operating officer of CJ 4Dplex, said the audience size for 4D films was about 1.5 times that for conventional features.

Major has earmarked 300 million baht to lease 160 projectors next year as part of a plan for new digital cinemas. Up to 50 more screens will open next year at a cost of of 600-700 million baht.

Major will also open low-cost 35mm theatres in many provinces, with tickets priced at 80-100 baht.

Is that right, it is in only four countries? I went to 4D movies Theater in Corolado in the US last month. I think it is about the theater itself, not the film. It combined the 3D film and interactive demension so that people and can see and play along as well. The seats are moving as well. It is pretty fun for kids and adults alike.

Cambodia also claim itself to have its own 4d cinema, located inside Dreamland (I never been to the cinema inside, cannot comment much)

The New Tallest Building in Thailand

CPN’s Suan Lum project gets go-ahead

Tallest skyscraper in development plan

KRISSANA PARNSOONTHORN and PITSINEE JITPLEECHEEP

Central Pattana Plc has formally been awarded a contract to redevelop the Suan Lum Night Bazaar from the Crown Property Bureau.

The highly coveted site, located opposite Lumphini Park at the intersection of Rama IV and Wireless Road, is expected to be renovated into a retail and commercial space that will include Bangkok’s tallest office skyscraper.

Naris Cheyklin, the CPN chief financial officer, said work on the 40-rai site would take around five years to complete.

The site would also include an exhibition centre, hotel and recreation zone, he said, with commercial space of the shopping plaza alone projected at up to 100,000 square metres.

“Our new shopping complex here will be totally different from existing retail destinations such as Siam Paragon and CentralWorld. We want to have a unique theme to attract tourists,” Mr Naris said.

CPN, the county’s largest retail developer and operator, is expected to invest at least five billion baht in the new shopping complex alone, with billions more for the hotel, office building and convention centre.

Kobchai Chirathivat, CPN’s chief executive, said last year that the company had proposed building a new 90-storey skyscraper on the site to serve as a landmark rivalling the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Aviruth Wongbuddhapitak, the assistant director-general of the Crown Property Bureau, said that CPN was awarded the development contract thanks to its “interesting and fresh architectural concepts that will both upgrade the look and value of both the site and adjacent areas”.

“The development is intended to serve the social and commercial needs of the community, and to assist in upgrading and improving the area within the site, as well as providing an incentive to upgrade land usage in adjacent areas.”

The Crown Property Bureau has been considering a new development plan for the Suan Lum Night Bazaar for four years. Other bidders for the contract included the developers Sansiri Plc, Natural Park and TCC Land.

The contract allows CPN to develop 40 rai of the 127-rai plot, formerly used for the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School. The Crown Property Bureau will reserve other space on the site for the construction of new embassies, as well as future development projects.

The lease held by P Con Development, the operator of the Suan Lum Night Bazaar, expired last March.

Retailers subleasing space from P Con would be allowed to stay at the site until April with no cost, Mr Aviruth said, with the land to be turned over to CPN by the end of the year.

CPN currently manages 10 shopping complexes nationwide with a combined retail space of 680,000 square metres. The company reported profit of 1.3 billion baht on revenue of 5.6 billion for the nine months ending last Sept 30.

CPN shares closed yesterday on the SET at 23.50 baht, down 50 satang, in trade worth 33.7 million baht

It takes so long for it

Merchants look to a busy second half
Newspaper section: Business

Retailers of all formats plan to accelerate their investments for the rest of the year in response to better-than-expected profits in the first quarter.

MsPhattaraporn says the Spot Rewards Card, which customises products and discounts, serves dynamic demand at each Tops outlet. Buoyed by betterthan- expected firstquarter results, local retailers are looking to the general election to help boost spending during the rest of the year.

The expect high consumer spending after the general election will also be another catalyst for expansion.

Suwit Kingkaew, president of the Thai Capital Retailers Development Association, said retail business investment over the first half of this year was likely to rise by 10% from the same period last year, but additional outlets would be small, restricted by city planning regulations.

Among those getting bigger are Big C Supercenter with 115 branches this year, up by 62% from last year, mainly reflecting its acquisition of the Carrefour chain.

Robinson Department Store will add three outlets while HomePro and Makro will each open four branches. The largest convenience store operator, CP All, plans to open 500 7-Eleven outlets this year.

According to Asia Plus Securities, investment expansion would continue until a new retail law comes into force, which may impose further zoning curbs. Therefore, political uncertainty that may delay the law could be a relief for retailers.

The performances of listed retailers this year are expected to be healthy despite uncertainty in the economy.

Sales are projected to rise by 5% thanks to new-store expansion. Net profit would rise 22.6% year-on-year, higher than the 15% industry average, said Asia Plus.

Listed retailers reported healthy results in the first quarter. Siam Makro Plc reported 685 million baht in net profit, up 45% year-on-year, while CP All earned 2.08 billion, a 24.35% rise, and Big C rose by 8.29% to 859.85 million baht.

Non-listed operators including Central Food Retail also plan aggressive expansion. Phattaraporn Phenpraphat, vice-president for marketing and public relations of the company, said the Tops operator planned to open 69 new retail outlets in all formats in the first half.

The performance of supermarkets upcountry has been very strong, especially the Tops Daily mini format, she said.

"In the past, customers came to Tops Daily only for grocery items but now they also buy fresh products, the items they used to get from wet markets. This reflects strong spending of people in rural areas,"she said.

Sales of Tops in the first half are expected to grow by 8% year-on-year.

A key strategic tool in its success is the Spot Rewards Card, which customises products and discounts to serve dynamic demand at each location.

Thank you
My Mandarin isn't that good, And I am shit in translations as I usually can not come up with equivalent word in English. let me try.

During the pass 2 movie festival, Korean and Japanese films has been popular for a while, this year, there is 10 thai movie, and the reveune (number of viewers) has keep on increasing.

So why is Thai movies so hot?
0:35, it is about a Thai movie, afternoon session, and the 600 odd seats is almost full. Then it goes on about the movie, nice pictures, sad feeling etc. has deep impact on the audiences.

0:54, the girl said she has never watch Thai movie before, from now on, she will take more notice. make her think about her high school years.

1:00 grandma said it is meaningful, reflect the truth, and mainland movie should learn form it,

1:45 Thai movie budget is usually around 700K-1M. so compare with minimum of 10m, or even 100m block buster american production, Thais movie can not be consider big budget at all.

2:00 even before the film festival, some thai mini series has becomes very popular across asia. so that help to bring the movies revenue up.

2:05 Thai movie success make people think about Chinese movie. Over the pass few years, $10m+ history movies are mostly Chinese production's first choice. so is it only big production based on history that can bring us awesome return? The scene, story line is very much the same, is only the budget that keeps on going up.

2:30 The lady in red said Chinese movie has got into a situation where the story line is very similar, so the increased in Thais movie popularity give a lot for the chinese producer to learn.

2:45 China movie need to comes in different variety, and we begin to have producers concentrate on other theme, the recent "most love" (starring Aaaron Kwok and Ziyi Zhang) is an example, it is about normal peoples love story and win lots of audience.

3:00 similarly, : Buddha Mountain 观音山, release in a quite time, has a revenue of over 70m.

3:27 a success of a movie, besides on the story line, release and promotion is equally important. in this flim festival, the thai team consist of 20 movie company, heavily promote Thai movies. And also place in Chinese words in all its promotion posters.

3:45 and their actors are also here to promote themselve, so the audience get to know them. the lady in black said, we learn that the china should also form a team up and and go out to other places to promote chinese films. You can't achieve these sort of impact with only 1 or 2 company

4:03 We can see the young director creative investment seminar, they come up with theme related to city, country, love, gangster, humur etc. and all their works has find a suitable partners. and this give china films industry a new insight.
