The cold war started between the USA and the Soviets.East Berlin was part of DDR,the german democratic repulic.Nobody was allowed to go to West Berlin wihtout the Soviet's permission. The Reunion of Berlin and the fall of the Soviet Regime and the "DDR" took place with the destruction of the wall in 1989.

When I was there last, I must confess I liked East Berlin more because it had all the cool museums. Must visit again soon.

first i am a berliner
i have to say that i dont like the appearance berlin has today. in my opinion some architects and town planner ruined this city ... the Kaiser-wilhelm gedächtniskirche was such a beautiful building but now its just a ruin and the two towers (modern churches) destroy the whole place -.-
today berlin is a big city but has only 3,5 million inhabitants...
1940 berlin had 4,5 million inhabitants - a very dark history made this differents .....

Dunno about that bright future, it's way too broke for that but I love Berlin all the same.
For a capital with a few million people it's very relaxed.

No part of this world has a bright future unfortunately...
But a city with a calibre like Berlin who has survived so much will for
sure stand tall even when all the rest of the world has gone down
hill.
Let´s pray that day will come a lot later than sooner though!
