This luxury hotel on the Princess Street of Kochi.Mr.Koder. a renowned businessman and a reputed Jew, built this house in the Portugese colony of Fort Kochi in 1868. After Koder family left for Israel, this was rented out to different business organizations .In the transition from Koder house to Grand Residencia, the Abad Group has taken care to retain the old-world charm of this historic house. The open courtyard, long verandas, typical Portuguese doors and windows.. everything’s remains the same even after a century. The beautiful swimming pool in the courtyard, party room which can accommodate 40people, the multi-cuisine restaurant and the reading lounge. Bat and Ball Inn – Cricket Themed Homestay In Kochi

Quote:
With cricket season still on, and cricket-fans cheering out loud for Kochi Tuskers, cricket seems to be filled in the streets and houses in Kochi. For all those people who eat, sleep and drink cricket, here is a new place for you to stay cricket as well. Bat and Ball Home stay near Foreshore Road, can be called as a cricket museum, due to the kind of stuff they host out there.

Owned by some heroes of Indian cricket, we have J.K.Mahindra and Sreesanth, who are the owners of Bat and Ball. Along with a comfortable stay, you also get to see rare things like Sachins batch, Kapil Dev’s jersey, Sreesanth’s mementos and lot more. The feel of ‘cricket in the air’ when you enter the home stay cannot be replaced by any other restaurant in Kochi.

There are 5 suite rooms, and the place claims to be Kerala’s first cricket based home stay. “The response of the crowd is good. We have a lot of people who come from various parts across the nation, especially tourists, who end up here”, says Aby Mathew, Manager for Bat and Ball. They have branches in places like Bangalore too! So, next time you plan to watch some ‘cricket action’, maybe you can celebrate the spirit with your friends in ‘Bat and Ball’!

Le Colonial- Fort Kochi

Le Colonial is a one of the most special luxury botique hotel in Kochi, having its own rich history unparallelled by any other similar structures in Kerala.

This 16th century mansion was constructed in 1507 AD under orders of Portuguese Governor Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Governor of India as seat of Government of Portuguese India within Portuguese capital at Fort Kochi (Erstwhile Fort Immanuel).

This 6 room mansion was the office and residence of Portuguese Governors. This was the first European styled Bungalow in India. The idea of independent house was put forward by Vasco Da Gama during his second visit to Kochi in 1502 and Kochi Maharaja allowed to construct a mansion and fort.

For more than 150 years, it remained with Portuguese and hosted several famous dignitaries like St. Francis during his Kochi visit and 3rd visit of Vasco Da Gama in 1524 (he died next day in his private residence at Vasco House in Kochi).

In year 1663, the Dutch army attacked Kochi and defeated Portuguese army in Kochi. The Fort Kochi fell into Dutch control. Le Colonial remained one of the few portuguese mansions, not destroyed by Dutch. Rather the Dutch made it as Headquarters of VOC (Dutch East India Company) office.

image hosted on flickr

The VOC inscribed gate is the only remaining vestiges of Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the world, as all VOC structures in Netherlands were destroyed or demolished.

The Le Colonial remained as official residence of Dutch Governor of India till 1795. In 1795, when Anglo-Dutch treaty was signed, Kochi was exchanged to British, instead of Indonesia. This building came under British East India Company, which served as its Tea Office.

When East India Company was dissolved in 1857, the property became part of British Crown Property. The English Government in 1890 sold the property to international tea merchant giant T Thomas and Co, which later became Indian headquarters of Thomas Tea. Post independence, the house became part of Thakur properties and now leased to India's leading heritage property group Neemrana Non Hotel group.

The French Army General of Tipu Sultan, while on their invasion to Travancore, relaxed in this property, after Kochi Maharaja issued military pass to Mysore Army to pass thro' Kochi Kingdom to reach Travancore. As a result, one room was reserved for Tipu Sultan, though he didn't check in that time.

The 6 rooms are named after its celebrity occupant; Jan van Spall (The last Dutch Governor), Major Petrie (British Army General of Kochi), J Thomas (The tea merchant), Vasco da Gama, Mahé de la Bourdonnais (French Army General of Mysore), Tipoo Sultan, the British viceroy (Lord Willingdon, who stayed here in 1937) and his ADC.

Most of the furnitures used inside the house are original and well preserved. The house houses more than 100 rare artifacts of high historical value. This includes 8 large European paintings and original caps and uniforms of Dutch and British Army officials.

The house all premium facilities, including a restaurant, pool side cafe, swimming pool, lawns and billards/reading room

Today, its one of the most highly sought among high rich European travellers.... Its a clear testimony of Kochi's deep association with European powers.

The exterior looks quite odd and doesnt match with the interiors shown!

The building has an ordinary flat feel!

Chittoor Palace-Kochi

Chittoor Palace- Kochi

Quote:
Chittoor Palace, located near Chittoor Temple, is heritage hotel property run by Cochin Royal Family. The Palace is one of the oldest structure in Kerala, built in 1501.

The Palace was constructed after the Kochi Maharaja, declared Chittoor Sri Krishna Temple as Royal temple, after when Zamorin (Samoothiri) of Kozhikode annexed Guruvayur Temple, which was the former royal temple of Kochi Rajas.

Ever since that, every year, the Kochi Raja and his family visit the temple during the annual temple festival as a procession. Since the Chittoor temple was located in island of Chittoor, a palace was constructed, where King spend his 10 days of festival.

Quote:
The palace played a crucial role, during the first Battle of Cochin, when the Zamorin and his large Nair Army invaded Kochi, seeking explusion of Portuguese guests, Francisco de Albuquerque, the agent Diogo Fernandes and a couple of Portuguese officials. As Kochi Raja, valued the friendship, more than his life, he refused to surrender the Portuguese guests. When the Kozhikode army entered into Kochi, the King and his Portuguese guests, took refugee in this palace, which was surrounded by backwaters and the Kochi Artillery sucessfully kept Zamorin navy at bay, untill arrival of Portuguese naval ships from Africa..... Thus the palace, played a significant role in history of India, for the defeat of Zamorin and first major success of Portuguese in India.

A spice garden and organic farm attached along with the property provides fresh spice and garden vegetables for the Palace Kitchen.

He loved seeing ships passing in front of his house and subsequently expanded the bungalow to accommodate his office. Post independence, the building came under control of Cochin Port Trust and served as residence of Port officials. Towards late 80s, the residences of officials shifted to Willington island, hence left this beautiful structure into ruins. Actually it was not Trident Hilton, as Trident Group bagged Hilton franchise in India and all their properties were branded as Hilton like Sheraton of ITC Group. But Hilton group cancelled franchise rights, for direct starting in India, hence all Trident properties were rebranded back to Trident.....

London-based hospitality major InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has drawn up big plans for India with increased focus on the mid-scale segment. The global chain is targeting to have 150 hotels in the country across its four brands by 2020. As a first step, it is gearing up to open 46 properties in the country over a period of five years.

Subsequently, IHG has signed a joint venture deal with Duet India Hotels Group to develop 19 new Holiday Inn Express hotels across India. IHG will pick a 24 per cent equity stake in the JV, making a multi-year investment of USD 30 million. The 19 Holiday Inn Express hotels will add around 3,300 rooms to IHG's current India development pipeline of over 10,000 rooms (46 hotels), said Chris Moloney, COO, IHG, South West Asia.

According to a report by Sajan C Kumar in The Financial Express, Moloney said, "India is a key market for the group and the growing middle-class segment augers well for the group's strategy. We will be extensively tapping the mid-scale segment opening many more hotels in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. And our Holiday Inn family brands will not only cater to business travellers, but also leisure and religious travellers." IHG is driving its growth in India through four brands such as InterContinental (upscale luxury hotel brand), Crowne Plaza (upscale business hotel brand), Holiday Inn (mid-scale brand) and Holiday Inn Express (focused mid-scale service brand). "In India, IHG has a development pipeline of 46 new hotels to be opened in the next couple of years across primary and secondary cities. IHG currently operates 14 hotels in key cities and is on track to develop 150 hotels by 2020 in key business and leisure hubs. The 19 Holiday Inn Express hotels, which IHG is planning to develop across India in partnership with Duet India Hotels Group, are expected to be operational by 2016. Close to 70 per cent of IHG's India pipeline is with the Holiday Inn brand. The first hotel in Holiday Inn Express category is expected to go on stream by mid-2012," he said.

The Holiday Inn hotels will be primarily located in India's major metros and key secondary cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Bangalore. Holiday Inn Express is one of the fastest growing hotel brands in the industry, opening on an average, two hotels a week globally. Moloney said the company had forged another joint venture with Amrapali Group to develop another clutch of Holiday Inn Express hotels in the country. This JV will develop hotels in places such as Udaipur and Kochi. "We don't have exclusive tie-ups with anyone. We are entering into 20-year management contracts with separate companies to penetrate deeper into the mid-scale segment. Going forward, we may have more joint ventures in this segment," he said. On the investment side, he said that basically the company is not an investor but a manager and hence not required to invest heavily. "The USD 30 million fund with Duet JV is a novel idea to have more participation, but we won't be following the pattern elsewhere."

The hotel chain may bring its serviced apartments brand, which is popular in the US and Europe, to India. "At present, there is no immediate plan for that. In fact, we had tried our hand at it some time back, but wound up because of the viability factor. Currently, we are focusing on the mid-scale segment, and when the market evolves, we may consider taking a plunge into serviced apartments once again," he said. IHG currently has 400 employees and over a period of five years it intends to scale up the headcount to 25,000, Moloney added.
