More than just cinema halls, Mymoon and Lulu were two landmarks in the city— witnesses to the golden era of Malayalam cinema.

The twin theatres are in a deserted state after the Kokers Group sold it five years ago,

"It was in September 1981 that we inaugurated both the theatres. The movie, 'Raktham,' directed by Joshy, was the inaugural film in Mymoon and 'Vida Parayum Munpe' by Mohan was screened at Lulu. 'Vida Parayum Munpe' was a surprise hit. We even arranged special shows for women at that time."

"The first thought that comes to my mind when I travel through Chittoor Road is the image of lengthy queues of women below the posters of 'Vida Parayum Munpe,'" said Siyad Koker of the Kokers Group.

The one-acre property is currently worth Rs 50 to Rs 60 crore. "We sold the property to EMKE group five years ago due to financial burden and partition problems," Siyad said.

He said that many Malayalam movies considered as classics have been screened in Mymoon and Lulu. "We used to give equal importance to movies in other languages, too. Tamil movie 'Munthane Mudichu' ran for more than 100 days in Mymoon. The movie 'Akashadooth' did not get a good response in the first few days. But later it became a hit and we even arranged special shows for women," Siyad said.

The other major super hits that were screened at Mymoon and Lulu include 'Oru CBI Diarykurippu,' 'Irupatham Noottandu,' 'Kottayam Kunjachan,' 'Inspector Balram,' 'Lal Salam,' 'Koodevide,' 'Gentleman,' 'Kathalan' and many more.

The last major release was Mohanlal's 'Mahasamudram' in 2006. It is learnt that the EMKE Group is planning to construct a luxury hotel on the plot but the company is yet to start the preliminary work. As a result the theatre complex stands as a testimony to the crisis-stricken Malayalam movie industry.

For movie buffs, Mymoon and Lulu always evoke memories of the live action on 70 mm screen.

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/a-gloriou...50-60-122.html
I wonder will Lulu think of 4th luxury hotel in the city (after Marriot Edappally, Marriot Airport, upcoming Bolgatty hotel), that too in congested Chittoor Road?

The property is ideal, if considered for a Mall along with multiplex, because of its location. If they acquire the nearby Dhanwathri Hospital which lies back to this property, they gain an access to MG Road. Perhaps, it can make better returns, than a mere Hotel. Maybe they too might be thinking that direction....

What a coincidence... Lulu acquiring Lulu theatre!!! Emke is doing too good for Kochi!!!

Kerala Vaidyashala to open resort in Kochi
Quote:
Leading ayurveda spa operator Kerala Vaidyashala has said it sold its entire stake in Birla Kerala Vaidyashala to its partner Birla Wellness as part of its plan to exit the day spa segment that it has pioneered. Kerala Vaidyashala, which formed a partnership with Yash Birla group-promoted Birla Wellness in December 2008, has also decided to invest around Rs 50 crore in health tourism, and the stay spa segment while completely exiting the day spa segment, company promoter Harshajeet Kuroop said. The JV, in which Kerala Vaidyashala had 49 percent stake and the Birlas the rest, has been operating 32 day spas in major cities, including 11 in Mumbai. While most of the spas are standalone, it runs one at the Collate Apollo Hospital. Before the JV with the Birlas, Kerala Vaidyashala had opened the country's first ayurvedic day spa, where only out patients are treated, in Mumbai in 1997, Kuroop said. Normally ayurvedic spas admit people as its medication and massage therapies are time-consuming and demand strict dietary controls. Such spas are called stay spas. Elaborating on the his future plans, Kuroop said his focus will be health tourism, mostly based in Kerala, which include building health food and regular nutritious food outlets under the label of Malabar Koast, which opened its first outlet in Mumbai recently. That apart, it will also start naturopathy and yoga centres with residential facility. Kuroop's upcoming projects include a semi-luxury 27-bedded wellness resort in Kerala's backwater capital of Alappuzha, a luxury stay spa with 22 cottages and rooms near Kochi; and a highend luxury resort at Kozhikode with 40 cottages. Kuroop also has plans to set up ayurvedic speciality hospitals, wellness centres in Kerala and Rajasthan. All these projects will together involve an investment of around Rs 50 crore, he said, adding he will pump in 50 percent of this and the rest will be arranged from private equity players.

Farhan on unexplored destinations
Quote:
Director of cult films like Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Farhan Akhtar has always been known for taking the Indian audiences to new destinations with every movie. On being asked how he decides the location for a movie, he says, “As a filmmaker, I try to make the setting of the film an integral part of the story — not merely the backdrop. Don 2, which comes out later in the year, needed a really wintery setting, so we chose Berlin.”

Farhan is fond of road trips and often gets into his car and just drives away to land up in places like Goa or Coonoor. Talking about his new film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara that is his foray into the road movie genre, he says, “The story is about three friends—played by Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and myself—who make a pact to go on a road trip before they get married. They keep their promise and end up travelling around Spain together.”

Sharing his experiences about holidaying with family, Farhan says, “My wife Adhuna and I have taken our daughters, ten-year-old Shakya, and Akira, who’s four, to a lot of different places. In fact we went to Berlin on a road trip back in 2007, when Akira was just a few months old.”

On being quizzed about his honeymoon destination with wife Adhuna, he said, “Adhuna and I went to Fort Kochi in Kerala. We stayed at a beautiful boutique hotel called The Malabar House and spent time cruising the backwaters. It was quite romantic.”

Hindustan Times
Infact, his film venture Kartik calling Kartik was shot in Kochi for few days.

Old Courtyard Hotel - Fort Cochin, Kerala

The Old Courtyard Hotel was known as Lily Koder’s house. The eminent Koder family of Fort Cochin, who were Jews. The house was built for Lily Koder’s brother, but unfortunately he did not live long to occupy the house.

Jacob and Rose Kuruvinakunnel found Lily Koder’s house the perfect setting to start their own hotel. The old mango tree in the center of the courtyard was the clincher so that they could transform it to a small and intimate hotel.
The rooms are created in the colonial style of four poster beds, intricate cupboards, tables, lion face, 5 headed elephant and other unusual pieces. Original art work and paintings are show cased in the Old Courtyard Restaurant and rooms.

The restaurant opens on to the courtyard to serve quality dining in a mellow atmosphere. Fresh seafood caught daily in the picturesque Chinese fishing nets are a specialty. The cuisine covers a delectable range of Kerala, Continental, Mediterranean and Asian flavours . Indeed, a savory alternative to the very spicy local fare. Among the ambrosial array of desserts, “Rose’s cheesecake” is justly famous!
