It looks from the pictures like the old trams were narrow gauge but the new computer renders look standard gauge - is there an intention to relay the entire track system?

Nope. Old Santa Teresa's trams will be the same, new light rails will cover the center city.

Rio de Janeiro tram contract signed, International Railway Gazette, 07 May 2013

BRAZIL: RATP Dev and its local partners Companhia de Concessoes Rodoviarias, Odebrecht Transport and Invepar have won the contract to build and operate a 28 km tram network in Rio de Janeiro. The deal announced on May 7 requires the first 14 km section to open by the end of 2015, in good time for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Rolling stock and other equipment will be supplied by Alstom. RATP Dev will train staff, monitor construction, carry out testing and operate the service.

The network will have 42 stops serving the business district, the Porto Maravilha area, the Olympic press village and Santos Dumont Airport.

The Santa Teresa system was shut down after a fatal accident in 2011. So yes, there is no tram system in Rio at the moment. The Santa Teresa system will be revived by May 2014, before the FIFA World Cup.

The news posted above refers to the modern light rail low-floor tram system proposed for the city center.

All of that is explained in the BRAZIL URBAN TRANSPORT COMPILATION thread, summarized on page 01, Rio de Janeiro (post #3).

Good news, so then Rio will get two types of tram, one is in meter gauge, another is in standard gauge, and both will be separate from each other?

Yes, the modern Port-area Light Rail system will be actual public transportation and nothing else, whereas the Santa Teresa trams will be historical/heritage/ touristic (in addition to being used as regular transport for dwellers of that charming hillside district)

Very interesting! Where also on earth are tram systems with PSD? I think that Rio will be first tram system in the world with PSD, or second if Dubai tram will open first.

Because of orders from new Rio de Janeiro tram system, Alstom will produce Citadis trams in Taubaté, Brazil. The new plant will begin producing in 2015.

Will this same stocks run on existing routes also? I mean Santa Teresa? Or they will run the same century old stocks?

Will the new tram routes run on part of the some now closed routes?

Proof of payment is unlikely to work in Brazil.
