If that's the case, we're lucky a319s don't go any further than manila. or else those birds would be too heavy to fly. (or at least takeoff from DGT)

hey guys, remember the old Bacolod Airport?....its other end extends to the sea while the other end runs along the city's commericla center and downtown...much like HK's Kai-Tak Airport before...hehehehehe

we lived with that old airport (na mas pangit pa kesa ibang old domestic airports during its existence) for 60 years before we had our new airport...dont worry at wag magmadali..ang importante its safe and caters well to its passengers...they will just come and come

I agree, there really is no need for a new airport at the moment. I think that though the airport is relatively small, but it is well maintained and spacious enough. I guess the main concern, well for me anyway, is the runway length and not necessarily on the terminal. I'm no aviation expert, but I think there is a need to extend the runway for safety purposes.

Just got word that CEB will add another daily flight to DGT by October. So CEB will now fly 3x daily to DGT starting 4th quarter of this year. They will also increase their CEB to DGT from 3x weekly to 7x weekly by October as well.

The airport runway can no longer be extended due to topographic limitations. However, as short as it is, it also polishes the skills of the jet pilots. Not to worry though, the landing and take-off zone are calculated to have safety margins. Santos Dumont airport in Rio, Brazil is perhaps the busiest jetport with a runway slightly above 1600m. There are weight restrictions and pilot, aircraft certifications to operate there just like London City airport. For the amount of traffic Dumaguete is getting as compared to these airports, it is really not that bad and perhaps having a clean and well maintained terminal is the best part of it all.

As I have said...Dumaguete can wait....your airport is one of the most challenging in the country....before the old Bacolod Airport is also limited and is a tough challenge to pilots...even it has extended out to the sea there were weight restrictions then....the flight path runs along the city proper/downtown of Bacolod...It was even said that, the best PAL pilots fly the Bacolod route since it takes good precision to take off and land at a short airport just 4 kilometers from the downtown area

Nice illustration Boy!, it does have close similarity with Dumaguete but it is also at least 100m longer. The only difference is this has a river on the other end and houses across; while that of Dumaguete has a jetbalst deflector on one end to protect vehicles running along the highway. Been to Bacolod many times way back and I've always wondered how we can land safely in such a narrow runway with minimum clearances on the side. Yes, only the best of PAL pilots would land here yet one of them miscalculated the touchdown one night and crossed the river and plowed the houses ahead that fateful night. The first Airbus of PAL written off.

yeah...kahit ilang beses na akong pumupunta ng Dumaguete, I would always be in awe seeing the edge of the runway just a few meters from the national highway and the mountains just beyond...then at the opposite end...the sea...hehehehehe....parang Caticlan, Loakan, Basco and Lumbia...

I remember that...PAL PR 137 na landed midway then overshot the runway plowed thru 15 houses, a dicotheque killing 3 people on the ground.

Meron din Cebu Pacific na DC9 a year or 2 earlier that skidded off the runway.

I think Dumaguete would do well with it muna...hehehe..although a little extension out to the sea might be feasible...

Point well taken guys. Its great to have discussions like these. Great to discuss options on how we can improve one's place.

I just opened the discussion on the runway extension, since in the so many times I've used the airport, still feel a little uncomfortable every time the plane lands and the automatically deploys the spoilers and reverse thrusts. As I said, the terminal, biases aside, is really clean, well-maintained and beautiful especially after they landscaped the place.

Been to BCD several times as well during the time of the B732s... I think TAG is also in the same present situation as BCD was before. If you're staying in MetroCentre you can really see the planes just several meters above you when they're coming in to land from the city.

BTW, here's confirmation of the information I disclosed yesterday:

Cebu Pacific set to increase number of domestic flights

By Lenie Lectura, Business Mirror
Posted at 05/19/2011 7:51 AM | Updated as of 05/19/2011 2:05 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Listed Cebu Air Inc., operator of budget airline Cebu Pacific (CEB), plans to increase domestic flights in the last quarter of the year by adding as much as 33-percent more seats compared with the same period last year.

“This is in line with CEB’s continued commitment to promote tourism and economy in the destinations it flies to. Foreign and local travelers can book with CEB to explore the Philippines’ top beaches and diving sites, and attend the country’s most popular fiestas,” said vice president for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog in a statement.

The company will take delivery new aircraft that will support the airline’s expansion plans. Three brand-new Airbus A320s will arrive in October. CEB said this will allow the airline to offer the lowest possible fares in the market and mount more domestic flights.

“We currently already offer the most flights and the lowest fares to Cebu and Davao, two key cities in the Visayas and Mindanao, compared with any other airline. Tourists will [soon] have faster, easier access to the most extensive route network in the country,” added Iyog.

With these flight increases, the airline will also continue to have the most flights to popular tourist destinations such as Boracay, Coron, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro.

Effective October 1, CEB will increase flight frequencies in the following routes: Manila-Butuan-Manila (2x to 3x daily); Manila-General Santos-Manila (2x to 3x daily); Manila-Tacloban-Manila (4x to 5x daily); Manila-Davao-Manila (from 45x to 49x weekly)

Effective October 7, the airline will increase flights to Manila-Davao-Manila (7x to 8x daily); Manila-Dumaguete-Manila (2x to 3x daily); Manila-Roxas-Manila (7x to 12x weekly); Cebu-Butuan-Cebu (7x to 11x weekly); Manila-Boracay (Caticlan)-Manila (86x to 91x weekly); Cebu-Dumaguete-Cebu (3x to 7x weekly); Cebu-Pagadian-Cebu (4x to 7x weekly).

On October 14, CEB flights will add more flights to the following routes: Manila-Cagayan de Oro-Manila (6x to 7x daily); Cebu-Davao-Cebu (24x to 28x weekly); Manila-Cebu-Manila (80x to 87x weekly); Manila-Coron (Busuanga)-Manila (2x to 3x daily); Manila-Boracay (Caticlan)-Manila (13x to 14x daily); Manila-Naga-Manila (3x to 4x daily).

Additional seats will be given to the following routes as CEB upgrades its route aircraft from an ATR 72-500 to an Airbus A319: Cebu-Ozamiz-Cebu (Daily); Manila-Tuguegarao-Manila (Daily); Cebu-Bacolod-Cebu (Daily); Cebu-Cagayan de Oro-Cebu (Daily); Cebu-Iloilo-Cebu (Daily); Cebu-Tacloban-Cebu (Daily).

CEB’s net income during the first quarter dropped to P1.2 billon from P1.56 billion in the same period last year mainly due to the rise in aviation fuel expenses. It carried 1.94 million passengers during the period out of the 2.39 seats it allocated, resulting in a load factor of 81 percent.

Dumaguete Airport is really clean and beautiful....I hope Caticlan's G.P.Ramos Airport would be maintained like this....

And those pics on the runway, they remind me of Basco Airport in Batanes. Mt. Iraya at he other end and the sea at the other end

Nice capture of the runway indeed. The red and white stripes on the far end is the jet blast deflector to protect vehicles and pedestrians on the highway, one of its kind in the Philippines and I can bet no other airport in the country have this!

But sir I remember before sa Bacolod ( a long time ago), we have that red and white striped thing at the end of the runway that faced the Araneta St. and city proper. But later parang di ko na nakita. Was that a deflector too?
