Not quite the same situation anymore... sometimes I take the CEB or BCD flight to save on cost...

You mean the DC-9 was prevented by ATO from landing in Dumaguete due to crosswind while Airphils' 737 was fine?, or it was just the 5j's pilot discretion not to do so in light of the Sumagaya incident. Well, another 737 accident in Davao perhaps changed the course of actions by Airphils pilots after that. Dumaguete is a special airport to speak of with the rising terrain on one end and the threshold kissing the waves on the other.

From what I was told, it was the pilots decision to divert. You could actually see the DC-9 circling before heading to Cebu. Few minutes later the 732 came and landed from the sea without incident. You could hear 5j passengers raging why they had to stay while we are boarding.

Now that's a spice to add on this airports history! I don't blame the pilot but must be a PR nightmare for 5j staff. As far as I have seen this airport has been the most orderly and clean; can the photos speak for itself?, otherwise the locals can do more testaments.

They say that approach to R09 is one of the most toughest approaches in the Philippines, since it needs more than just "fly straight in." They have to take note the hills on the western portion of DGT and urban areas below it.

What I love about DGT is that the runway is like somewhere in UP Diliman...the acacia trees beside the airport perimeter fences offer a lovely view.

Like what I said before, that approach actually triggers the terrain warning system that prompted 5j pilots doing the probing flight to override the system, so yes it is proximate to rising terrain. On the other hand, the approach from the sea is like landing in an aircraft carrier as the threshold lines are projected beyond the shoreline.

look at those trees, almost obstructing the flight path. and the terrain too!

@litigs

do you think a runway extension to the west will really commence according to the manager? for safety concern, might as well have new location for the airport... that might be 10 or more years but planning ahead for safety is very well accepted.

Great shots of the airport, I'm impressed. Like what I said, I doubt that runway can be extended beyond the highway due to terrain. If it already triggers the terrain warning system based on the current touchdown zone then that is convincing enough. Well they may extend the runway to allow for more take-off roll towards the sea and that threshold will remain as a displaced threshold. The slope of the mountain can not be altered just to suit the glideslope when the runway is extended futher in. It is not a small hill that can be demolished. By the way, I haven't seen any domestic airport wherein small details of the landscape-the fountain garden, is attended to carefully. That's the beauty of this airport.

I flew out of DGT around 10 times already this year, and in all those times, we landed and took off from R27 (from the sea). They may be using R09 as minimally as possible.

buti pa check in counters ng Dumaguete airport hindi mukhang lotto outlet. Luv that garden on the tarmac...very refreshing nakakatanggal ng tense lalo na sa mga first timers na sasakay ng airplane...
Iba talaga kapag babae ang airport manager...may finesse talaga kahit anong size pa ng airport. tsaka ang mga gurls kasi mabusisi sa detalye eh kaya no wonder na for DUmaguete airport. cheers!

I don't know if it is just me but I have always thought that ALL electronics must be turned off upon takeoffs or landings. Is this a rule or a request only? I wonder because I see a lot of videos in youtube taken from inside the plane. Is it safe to have them on?

As far as I know, the real disturbance would be coming from mobile phones. It's a CAB regulation. However, andaming tao na paglanding pa lang ng eroplano eh bukas na kaagad ng phone tas tatawag na...eh nasa runway pa.

I feel guilty sometimes for discreetly violating this rule too. But let me emphasize that the concern is radio interference to an aircrafts electronic equipment most notably the gyroscope and radio compass that receives the VOR signals to set the flights course. Well not unless I know that the flight is on instruments specially at night then I put off the electronics. I have taken night landing videos by the way but that being on a clear weather where I know the pilot can land VFR with the runway lights beyond. Anything emitting radio signals must be turned off at all times, so as a cardinal rule, use the video and camera discreetly and wisely during landing and take off. Cellphones are a no.
