hkskyline's 2010 FLORENCE Photo Collection

Florence was as I had expected - touristy. I hope this series can showcase more non-tourist-trap places but I have a feeling they would still have been photographed a zillion times by now.

I like touring local markets, and the Mercato Centrale was fairly decent.

The market seemed sanitized for tourists though. It was so clean and devoid of local shoppers!

There are plenty of statues and sculptures around. Photos like this one would be perfect for a subsequent art thread on Florence in the architecture section.

This is not the real David though.

Weather was not on my side though. However, the view from the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte was nevertheless stunning.

This is a great picnic spot.

These tourists chose the lazy way to hike the hill to the vantage point.

Basilica di Santa Croce is located on the other side of the historic town, and likely missed by tourists following the standard agenda.

The square fronting the church was quiet though.

Some authentic streetscapes.

More in the next part, which will be posted in this thread!

Great shots there! In some ways the grey skies and rain make for a more atmospheric appearance of the place.

^ While I was not happy with the rain, the cloudy setting did look quite interesting to photograph. That being said, I need to go back during a sunnier season!

The statues on display are deep in thought, staring into the crowd of tourists that dress so differently from the time they were created.

Palazzo Vecchio's interiors are lavishly decorated with scenes of war victories to spite its enemy neighbours.

The tour included a visit to an observation area which was originally roped off. The tower was tall enough to rise above the neighbouring buildings' roofs for a good city-wide panorama.

This spot uphill was easily accessible by transit and is a great place to spot Florence from above. We ended up visiting this place several times.

I wasn't able to find remnants of the city walls inside the city, but the hillsides are harder to develop so these were able to survive until today.

Basilica di San Miniato al Monte's interiors are dark, but colourfully-decorated.

Back downhill, the Basilica di Santa Croce was a short walk from the main historical centre, but appears to be neglected by tourists.

The square fronting the basilica was empty and wet from earlier afternoon rains.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the city :

Battistero di San Giovanni has an amazing interior. Despite the lack of windows, the gold and white still shines quite well.

Next door, the Duomo's interior is less distinguished.
