The Petronas are for me a modern Chrysler, they didnt hold the tallest record for very long but ther archtecurally more interesting(if not as iconic/famous) than the ESB IMHO..

CB advance to the final. Hope it will meet Petronas. It will be an epic art deco vs modern tower.

Incredible Boring Final, Chrysler Building vs Petronas Towers; It would have been so much better an Empire State Building (A building with much more Cultural significance than the Chrysler, and also is taller) vs Burj Khalifa (Dont have to say anything else)

the esb is much more famous than the petronas towers. the only time those were known outside of their regional area was soon after they were built, because they were the controversial new wtb's. that fame was only temporary, however, and they have fallen into a much more obscure state than that which esb is in. esb is still famous and will most likely always be more famous.

The Empire State Building NOT in a Final of world skyscrapers? Not a competition in my book.

ESB should be there instead of the Chrysler building, IMO. What an odd outcome.....

Popularity can be gauged on many variables, not specifically population.

I doubt you speak for the entire Asian continent. We're not talking about a random skyscraper in the United States here. The Empire State building epitomizes the skyscraper.

Petronas Towers are very worthy of their spot in Finals. I'm not doubting that whatsoever....just the fact that we're having a skyscraper competition that won't include the ESB just doesn't sit well with me.

Not quite familiar with how that feels, unlike you I assume.

Just my opinion concerning the ESB is all.....I think many people agree with me on that. However, each to his own .

It would be a shame not to see the ESB in the final.
The ESB has been the world's tallest for 40 years. It has a historical value as no other scyscraper in the world, it was built in a revolutionary way. And still, years after it was built, it dominates the skyline of manhattan - the prototype of every megacity!

Aks any child to draw a picter of a skyscraper - you'll get a picture similare to the ESB.

I don't want to make the Petronas look poor, those are two amazing towers with a great value for asia. But they are not yet capable of being as important as the ESB.

Go ESB, get them!

ive asked multiple people from both china and vietnam whether they believe the esb or petronas towers are more iconic, and they all said esb. keep in mind that these people are relatively recent immigrants to the US as well.

Btw the competition is not a popularity contest. (I hope this is not World Skyscraper Idol. )

It's quite sad nobody in this URBAN FORUM talks about the building itself, but more of other things.

Let us share why any of those buildings deserve to be in the FINAL.

This final shows that spire buildings are more iconic or favorite than flat roofed one...

So:

@patchay

they are in this final because of popularity. petronas, esb, burj, chrysler, all of them. i can guarantee you that ~95% of the people that visit this website understand hardly anything about architecture. this was always (as sad as it is) a popularity contest rather than an architectural one, and it is because of that reason.

And what do you think, why are these skyscrapers so popular?

All of them are very interesting in terms of achitecture. All of them do have a special shape and they were built in ways, no building was built before them.
So I do see a relation between architecture and popularity.
