I think I like that by 1 of the 4 measures, the Petronas were the tallest, but I think I'd have either pinnacle or roof as the 'official' measure, not the highest architectural element. The new categories were created due to controversy, ie it was thought that the Petronas was cheating, so I'm not sure how making the criteria by which the Petronas is tallest the 'official' measure remedied that.

Chrysler I believe would have been, had CTBUH been around with their post 98 measures, the tallest in all 4 categories.

FYI, PETRONAS was never intended to be the TALLEST TOWER at the time of inception. It was intended to bring a symbol of economic progress and cultural harmony to this part of the world. It was so happened that the designers suggested to put a taller spire at the roof that will make it taller than Willis.

PETRONAS is like Jessica Alba. Young, modern, curvy and sexy.

From the below pic, you can see Chrysler is really boxy, outdated and unsuited in this era. Yes, I have very high respect for Chrysler and loves its Art Deco, but I guess it is not worthy for the SUPERTALL WORLD CUP in 2011.

Wow, so just because a building has right angles (which aren't even the dominant shape of the building) means it's boxy these days? Get real.

I like how ppl bitch about the Chrysler building, being the first supertall. And the first man made structer over a 1,000 feet. It was 80 years ago, none of you were around. You can change the past so get over it.

Btw given a chance, I would think WTC is much better than ESB and Chrysler.

And ESB is better than Chrysler. (ESB was already beaten by Petronas)

If I knew nothing about architecture, I'd say that Chrysler doesn't look anywhere close to being 80 years old, it looks futuristic and avant-garde (especially on a rainy night)

If you told me that they finished yesterday, I'd tell you that it's way ahead of its time!

Sorry? The Chrysler is 'boxy' and doesn't fit in with our times (though despite these strong opinions you still say you 'respect' it), but you think the Twin Towers, the boxiest towers ever in existence, are nicer, and would fit? That makes so much sense, you should see somebody.

I can never choose between the ESB and the Chrysler.

Your first line of the WTC being better than ESB and Chrysler voids your opinion henceforth.

And don't act so smug about Petronas 'beating' the Empire State Building, in an online forum of all places. It's not very becoming.

Doesn't bother me if they do. These contests just reflect the makeup of the site and prevailing tastes here. People at this site tend to embrace anything shiny and new and disregard historical places and things. But European and American forumers tend to be far more respectful of past historical buildings and cityscapes, I've noticed.

Don't take me too seriously....I'm just slowly picking away at him after the ESB/Chrysler remarks .

In the typical chauvinistic American persona, I may be a bit biased towards the ESB.....however, it truly is a remarkable building that, in my own personal opinion, most assuredly belongs in the final round. I have always liked the Chrysler building (and Petronas as well), and my ESB opinion does NOT null my attitude towards these beautiful towers. That being said, I think most citizens of the world identify with the ESB in the snap of a finger when someone says the word skyscraper....not due to superiority, western culture, etc....but due to the simple elegance, beauty, and power that has come to symbolize the modern highrise; all of which have resonated from the Empire State Building for eighty years and counting.

Agree with you. How Chrysler can beat Burj Khalifa? Burj Khalifa should be in the final together with Petronas. Something is not right.

To me, it is entirely obvious. I really honestly don't like the cladding up close of the Petronas.

Well, the people voted, and this is what happened. I dare say everything is entirely 'right', just as if the Burj had won, all would be right, if that was the will of the people. The Chrysler beat the Burj fair and square.
