Actually, there are a lot of Americans who voted Petronas, but I bet there's not a single Indonesian who would even consider voting Chrysler.

It's nationalism, pure and simple...if it is in their country, or built by "Asians" () or whatever, they're going to vote for it, whereas we Westerners are more open-minded and are (mostly) above such petty things. We had our "nationalist" phase back in the 1800s and early 1900s; we've advanced beyond that now.

I think it's completely ridiculous how Indonesians consider Petronas a "Symbol of Malaysia" or Asia or whatever.

1) Get your own Architect
2) Get your own Structural Engineers
3) Don't use American engineering & design ingenuity, and then bash their buildings as being "ugly" in clearly nationalistic overtones on fun but essentially meaningless forum competitions

Want to see some REAL Asian skyscrapers?

1) Central Plaza, Hong Kong
2) Taipei 101
3) Bank of China

Personally, I think all three are extremely ugly (but Taipei is definitely better than the other two). I mean, just look at Central Plaza...and BoC is a gimmick trying to pass itself off as art.

To me, that (and the fact that about 85% of all skyscraper currently under construction in the world are being designed/engineered by Europeans & Americans) tells me everything I need to know. But I guess the Indonesians here are having too much fun cheerleading the ultra-kitsch Petronas and bashing REAL art

symbol here doesnt meant "made by"..its more to " made in" and inspiration idea from all over asian, pagoda, chinese tample, angkor wat, islamic geometric, arabic dome...its more about building design, not the designer itself...

What are you saying?
The petronas were not designed by americans.
Please look up information before you speak it.
By the way, the only real art that should be competing is the burj khalifa and petronas, not this crappy, boxy, crack filled building

petronas twin tower was inspired by exprime malaysia ,mahathir mohamad,it has been detailed and design by pelli after that.so the main idea, the design, the money all from malaysian, thats why its call malaysia pride, and asian symbol

I think its pretty ridiculous how you over emphasis on western architects too. You are showing more of a nationalist tone or rather 'racial' tone than anyone else here.

Hahaha, what a typical "I have nothing to prove (or in this case, disprove), so let's throw his arguments back at him and see what happens" type rebuttal. In order to be "ridiculous" or to "over-emphasize" something, what I said would actually have to be false. Please state concisely the factual errors that I made in my post.

As for "racial overtones?" Lol, so somebody saying "Go Asians; I'm from Mexico" is somehow less racist/nationalistic than a post that provides concrete examples and draws logical inferences from them in order to support a prominent point? Get real. What I have said is much less provocative/inflammatory than the poo-slinging currently going on in competition comments

God forbid you say things that many Petronas supporters have been saying over and over. I love the fact that they can spout their mouths off about random garbage, but then have the nerve to call us rude. Children like that make me laugh, and very appreciative of the fact that I can stand back and admire Petronas AND admire Chrysler without turning this into "A symbol of Asia" vs. "the 'Rude' west."

So true. By the way, if anyone checks my voting record, they'll discover that I voted Petronas over ESB and BK over Chrysler, because that's how I really feel.

@kix111 - I'm sorry, were you attempting to inform me that my fact-based post not only contained "racial overtones," but was also somehow worse than the senselessly agitating bile currently being spewed in the actual competition itself? Kinda sucks when the truth is racist, doesn't it? Anyways, since both your posts were completely devoid of content and you (understandably) declined to disprove anything I said, why should I listen to you? I believe my argument with you here is finished.

I'm pretty sure any direct insults are not tolerated within ssc. So please stop using them.

And you really need to stop looking in the mirror when you say such things to yourself .

The thing i like about the petronas is that it mixes a bit of islamic architecture with modern architecture

The Chrysler Building is still to this day, eighty years later, the world's tallest steel-supported brick building. It is also the world's first structure to surpass the 1,000ft mark.
