Looks like an even bigger event is coming to town. FIBA wishes to get 3-on-3 matches on the Olympic program by 2016, and will therefore host a first ever 3-on-3 World Championship this August. Greece seems to be the big favorite to host the tournament, and the games will most likely be played on the Kallimarmaro.

Sounds like a perfect tournament for Athens!

Quote:
The world «3 on 3» To the Kallimarmaro!

Very close to host the world championship tournament «3 on 3» is Greece, with the event probably even taking place at the Panathenaic Stadium.

In Greece, most likely be held the world championship «3 on 3» in August and even in Kallimarmaro.

This news came on the sidelines of yesterday's meeting held in Spain on the occasion of the World Championship in 2014 and which was attended by George Vassilakopoulos.

So the Panathenaic Stadium, which has lived in the past great basketball moments as the final of the Cup Winners Cup in 1968 between AEK Athens and Slavia Prague, reopens its doors to a great basketball event.

I have been doing some search and I would like to share some trivia and pictures I found

Originally during the 1890s rebuilt, Architect Metaxas wanted to include a Doric Stoa around the top of the stadium working as exhibition hall, a proposal that was abandoned...

Some pictures taken possibly around 1870s, before the rebuilt

The tunnel through the hill was built during the rule of Lykourgos in the 4th century BC and survives almost intact

The Corinthian Propylea were added in the 1900s, and remained in place until 1943 when the Germans actually took the columns to Germany (!!)

The bridge over river Ilysos

During antiquity a bridge connected the stadium with the city through with a arch on one side.

Miraculously (!!) it survived until the 18th century, arch included, until a tyrannical Turkish commander demolished it in 1776 along with many more surviving monuments... The damage to city was such that Sultan himself ordered his death

100 years later , in the second half of the 19th, century the bridge was rebuilt. Today it still exists beneath the street along with the river.
