Iranian researchers building artificial heart Source: ISNA
President of the University of Mashhad Medical Sciences said researchers at the university are building artificial heart for the first time in the country, describing it as a "key achievement" for Iranian scientists.

Researchers at the University of Mashhad Medical Sciences have started producing the device since last year, Mahmoud Shabestari said on Saturday, adding it takes two years to accomplish the system.
He further added that scientists at the university have designed and built several systems over recent years to detect and treat different diseases.
According to Shabestari, the university's researchers are building nine new drugs, mostly used for cancer.
The first anti-cancer drug in Iran and the Middle East was first developed by the researchers of the university and has been mass-produced for markets.
Iranian scientists have taken long strides in different scientific fields, including producing different types of drug such as hi-tech drugs, radio-medicines, knowledge-based drug, and nano-fiber needed for patients after the western states banned their sales to Iran.

Iran’s Royan Institute launches high speed cloning technique

Researchers in Iran’s Royan Institute for Biotechnology Research have developed a new technique that speeds up cloning protocols, ISNA has reported.

The method was designed to stimulate the speed and improve the efficiency of the former cloning procedures to facilitate the production of recombinant proteins and organs for xenotransplantation, said Dr. Mohammad Hossein Nasr Esfahani, principle investigator of the project at Royan Institute.

“Xenotransplantation is the transplantation of living cells, tissues or organs from one species to another.”

The research team examined the newly designed technique through cloning and transfer of 50 embryos at the Royan Institute.

According to the achieved results, nine pregnancies were positive, which is the highest reported rate in the world.

“In March 2013, of nine positive pregnancies in sample goats, eight transgenic animals were born and they are all in perfect health," Dr. Esfahani explained.

Established in 2004, Royan Institute for Animal Biotechnology was launched with the purpose of improving research in reproduction, development, cell and molecular biology.

Well known for its cloned animals, the Institute also covers many researches in the fields of bioengineering and reproductive technology.

Iran ranks 1st in region, 8th in world in nanoscience production

The secretary of Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC) says the country has ranked first in the region and eighth in the world in science production in the field of nanotechnology.

Addressing the first specialized conference on nanotechnology in electricity and energy on Wednesday, Saeed Sarkar said Iran ranked first in the region and 8th in the world by April 2013 in terms of nanotechnology by producing more than four percent of the world’ nanoscience.
“The production of nanoscience in the country has such a growing trend that Iran’s rank improved by around 50 places between 2000 and 2012,” the official said.
According to Sarkar, more than 15,000 experts and researchers are currently working in the nanoscience domain in the country.

He said that the top priorities of the INIC include energy, health, water, environment and construction works, adding that 57 nano-related laboratories are currently up and running across the country.

The Islamic Republic established the INIC in 2003 to promote the nation’s international ranking among the countries enjoying cutting-edge nanotechnology.

Iran has made considerable growth in nanotechnology over the recent years and the country produces a wide range of nano-materials.

In late January, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad unveiled eight new indigenous nano-products with carbon structure, which are used in the oil industry.

Nanotechnology is believed to be able to create many new materials and devices with a vast range of applications, such as in medicine, electronics, biomaterials and energy production.

Pars Rescue Robot Prototype Tested...They should invest on these kind of projects.
Quote:
You may recall our story in March of this year that described the Pars rescue robot concept developed by RTS Lab in Tehran, Iran. They presented a design for a flying robot that could quickly locate drowning victims in the ocean and launch life preserver floats to them. In less than a year, RTS Lab has gone from conceptual artwork to a working prototype of their robot. From their test report:

The robot’s tests have been taken from 11th to 15th August 2013 at the Caspian Sea. Thirteen tests were taken in a 4 day period and the following aspects were analyzed: Life vest releasing system performance, flight stability, search and rescue performance at day and night, Simplicity of robot’s control, comparing performance with traditional rescue methods, analyzing the deficiencies of robots design. Pars can fly ten minutes in this design and its maximum speed is 10 m/s, thus it can be used in missions with a 4.5 kilometer radius range. Tests were completely successful and all of the expected goals were achieved. Based on the test results and considering the general rescue methods new ideas for developing Pars were achieved that will be revealed after careful scrutiny.
RTS Labs hopes to create further, improved prototypes and eventually commercialize the life-saving robot. And, of course we have lots of cool photos of the robot in action during it's test flight over the Caspian Sea!
