THOUSANDS of jobs will be up for grabs soon, as call center firm Convergys Corp. intends to hire 5,000 new employees this year for its new contact centers in Baguio City and Cebu.

The company's 15th site in Baguio will formally open on July 27, signaling hope for many in need of a job with a majority of its workforce handling voice services.

In a statement Andrea Ayers, president and chief operations officer, said the company has 25,000 employees. "We're hiring every day."

"We have the potential to grow at 25 percent a year. This would create 1.3 million direct jobs, 3.2 million indirect jobs and US$25 billion in export revenues. The demand is there; it is up to us to ensure we provide the supply," she said.

Convergys' fourth site in Cebu is in Asiatown IT Park at TGU Tower.

Once the Convergys site is operational, the company will operate 15 facilities throughout the country -- eight in Metro Manila, four in Cebu City, and one each in Bacolod City, Santa Rosa, Laguna, and Baguio City.

Another site will open in Visayas or Mindanao within the year.

A techno hub in the camp is set to house call centers like led by top business outsourcing company, Convergys Corporation opening ground.

Convergys employees in the Philippines receive hundreds of thousands of customer service calls each day on behalf of global clients representing a wide variety of industries, including financial services, telecommunications, retail, e-commerce, direct response, and health care.

Davao chamber pushes for creation of Department of Information and Communications

DAVAO CITY — The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) is pushing for the creation of the Department of Information and Communications Technology in the Aquino government.

The DCCCII, through its president Dr. Maria Lourdes Monteverde, included the proposal in the list of resolutions which the chamber endorsed to Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio during the Davao City Business Conference recently held at a local hotel here.

Monteverde said in the resolution that the information and communication technology (ICT) business is fast growing in the country, particularly in Davao City with more locators keep on coming.

"With an ICT department, more expansions will be seen strengthening further the industry in the country," DCCCII resolution said.

Duterte-Carpio had committed to help endorse the resolution to the proper authorities.

She said the city government recognized that ICT was among the sunrise industries in the country, including Davao City, which showed good performance in terms of attracting foreign investors in the various sectors such as contact center, data entry and transcription, software, graphics and content development, animation and gaming, and engineering and design process, among others.

"Having an exclusive department to shepherd the further expansion of these sectors will therefore be strategic," the mayor said.

Duterte-Carpio also endorsed the ICT Roadmap, called Philippine Digital Strategy 2011-2015, a brainchild of the now defunct ICT Commission with the help of the private sector, saying it could be fully implemented if ICT were departmentalized.

She said an ICT department could also help sustain the industry's growth, specifically in Davao City which was ranked as the Number 1 Next Wave City in the Philippines last year.

Davao City, through the joint efforts of the local government and private sector, was able to entice this year more business process outsourcing (BPO) companies.

Duterte-Carpio cited some of the BPO companies that located to the city this year, including the VXI Global in Robinsons Cybergate with an initial 300 seats, and Lyanthe, a Dutch Knowledge Process Outsourcing company with 30 KPO agents, ramping up to 200 agents this year.

Recently, she also received information that the American BPO company Convergys is set to locate in the city. (PNA)

the team that is currently handling this project is processing the application for availment of local investment incentives with the Davao City Investment and Promotions Center (DCIPC). They are also applying for PEZA, but i don't know about the status of their application. Maybe after the approval of their application they could start the construction. malaki rin kc ang savings if they could avail of the local incentives, like exception to pay building permit, business permit, RPT due to local gov't and other local taxes.
