CALI: Experience it while jogging...

Cali (AKA Santiago de Cali) is a city in the southwest area of Colombia, founded by Spanish conqueror Sebastian de Belalcazar on July 25th 1536. Although the city is quite old (compared to the rest of the cities in the new world), it only became important since the beginning of the XX Century.

With a population of nearly 2.3MM the city occupies 169 sq.km. in its urban area. Its metropolitan area (around 3.0MM people) is considered the third most important industrial center of the nation and it is home to many foreign and local transnational companies. The Cauca Valley, where Cali is located, is the second region in competitiveness after the capital Bogota. Even though Cali is located in the Andean Region, lies on a fertile valley (again, the Cauca Valley), very close to the Pacific Ocean and its main seaport, Buenaventura.

Besides being and industrial, logistics, and service center, Cali is also famous in the country and Latin America for two passions that Caleños share: Passion for Sports, Passion for Salsa. Cali is also known for being an important Health Center (including both high tech and plastic surgeries) and a Cultural Center (Cali was pioneer in the country in many aspects: Film Industry, and the place of birth for the biggest Theater movement, later on settled in Bogotá, called Teatro Nacional).

Annual events include:
- International Theater Festival
- International Film Festival
- A-Jazz Go (Jazz and Blues Festival)
- Petronio Alvarez (Pacific Region and Black International Music Festival)
- World Salsa Festival (Cali is known as the World's Capital of Salsa, with hundreds of schools and a unique style, called Salsa Calena)
- Cali Exposhow, a reknown fashion and health industries event
- Countless conventions
- Feria de Cali, probably the most famous event in the city, with Salsa Concerts, parades including the Salsodromo, bullfights, and lots of cultural and sports events.
- Numerous local and international sports events: Cali has been home to world, continental, and local championships, including but not limited to World Championships of Basketball (both Men's and Women's, Swimming (M and W), Inline Skating, Underwater Polo, Wrestling), and Continental events such as the VI Panamerican Games and the 2001 Copa America (Soccer). Cali aslo hosted the 1995 Pacific Ocean Games and will host the 2013 World Games, not to mention that will host 8 games of 2011 U-20 FIFA World Cup.

After this brief introduction, I will start posting pics that I took during my last visit, when I decided to run every morning I stayed there and take some pictures at the same time.

Set 1: Images 1-21 of 63

1. First morning... It rained all night, so it was a bit cold for this city (18C, 64F)... Starting point: El Gato de Tejada (Tejada's Cat), located at the entrance of the Oeste (West Side).

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

2. I decided to run along the Rio Cali (Cali River) towards the "Portada al Mar" (Gate to the Sea), where the road to the Pacific seport of Buenaventura begins.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

3. Then I turn Towards the Zoo... Notice how the river comes with a lot of mud from uphill, did I mention that it rained ALL NIGHT???

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

4. Nice!!! I had to slow down for obvious reasons...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

5. Time to make a turn back, did not make it to the Zoo, what a shame...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

6. Continuing on Avenida Colombia following the river, we can see here the skyline in the Oeste (West Side)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

7. Lots of birds can be seen along the riverside..

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

8. A beautiful contrast of colors, still cloudy though...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

9. Keep running along the river on Avenida Colombia... Modern Art Museum (MAM La Tertulia)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

10. Countless afternoons spent at this place during high school... Kids now have google LOL

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

11. Few more meters and back to where I started, but still I have lots of fuel... This is the first time in many visits that I see this color in the river...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

12. Across the river from where I started, the Tejada Cat's girlfriends can be seen from here

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

13. Decisions, decisions... Towards Downtown or towards San Antonio? This is one of the main Hotel Zones in the City.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

14. Nah... My legs are still strong, let us go up the hill...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

15. Now running into San Antonio, an old district with inclined streets...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

16. Keep going up, I am starting to feel the 3000ft altitude... It is not that much but I am used to running at sea level..

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

17. Keep going, the top of the hill is close...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

18. I Finally reached the base of what is known as the "Colina de San Antonio" (San Antonio Hill)...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

19. Few more steps and I will reach the top of the hill...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

20. Stunning view of old downtown...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

21. And there she is... "Capilla de San Antonio" (San Anthony's Chapel, built in the XVIII Century) getting ready for Good Friday Celebration on a cold cloudy morning, something really rare in Cali...

33. Her Majesty Queen Jovita. Eternal Queen of Cali... In the old days, back in mid 1900's, this lady considered herself to be the Queen of Cali, and rich ladies would give her expensive dresses and jewerly, and everyone would treat her with respect on the streets, following her mind game...

Thank you, sunnyisles, for the pictures. I thought the quote was from "Mi pueblo," but it's not. I listened to it anyway while viewing the rest of the photos. Now I'm off to figure out which song contains the verses you quoted.

Cali. Beautiful in your photos. Maybe some day I'll get to visit there.

"Cali Aji"!!!
