So, at this point, is the Carlton Centre at 220 meters still the tallest in Africa? If so, we definately need a bit of a boom for taller African buildings...

Yes it is still the tallest (since 1973), and yes definitely we need to see another boom soon.

For 40 years, because nothing that tall is likely to be built in less than a year

Capita Symonds has unveiled plans for a new development in the Ugandan capital Kampala.

The company has designed the proposed ‘Kampala Tower’, a 222m high commercial building with public square which will be a new landmark for the city.

Comprising 60 storeys, it will be the tallest tower in Africa and will house over 100,000 sq m of office and retail space for up to 12,500 people. A public plaza at the entrance will create a new centre for events against the back drop of the tower and surrounding hills.

The project is currently under review by the Ugandan government.

I like the design but I think it may look a little weird in Kampala's skyline until other larger, modern buildings replace the aging.

Skycrapers and economic crash linked: Research

Just thought this was interesting. Research has found a relatively strong correlation between skyscraper boom and a looming economic correction, i.e. recession. As skyscrapers are a physical manifestation of a property bubble in the country. So lets be wary guys...

Quote:
A British bank has uncovered an "unhealthy correlation" between the building of skyscrapers and subsequent financial collapses in major cities.
New research by Barclays Capital cites examples including the Empire State building, built as the Great Depression was underway, and even the world's current tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, built just before Dubai almost went bust the BBC reported.

"Often the world's tallest buildings are simply the edifice of a broader skyscraper building boom, reflecting a widespread misallocation of capital and an impending economic correction," Barclays Capital analysts told the BBC.
The firm noted the world's first skyscraper, New York's Equitable Life building built in 1873, coincided with a five-year recession before being demolished in 1912.

Malaysia's Petronas Tower coincided with the 1997 Asian financial crisis and Chicago's Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), built in 1974, preceded the oil crisis, the study said.

The research has raised questions about China, currently the largest builder of skyscrapers in the world with 53 per cent of all the tall buildings in the world.

India is also one of the largest builders of skyscrapers with 14 projects currently underway
