So far a number of studies are nearing completion and the bridge has been given the "green light" by the government. So far there is no website of the project but its expected more news later this year. The bridge will become biggest bridge in Croatia at a lenghth of 2.3 kms. It will be about 25 metres above water. This is a render from a news article the past weekend which one of our members came across.

i thought it was gonna be a suspension bridge, like in the San Francisco Bay Area.

it doesn't trully matter, all we need is for the tourists to cross to Peljesac to get to Dubrovnik in some way or other!

Its all about real estate. The Peljesac peninsula will now be opened up instead of being some long backwater. The next best thing is that another bridge is also planned. A lot shorter which will cross over from Peljesac Peninsula over to Korcula island which will also connect another large chunk to the mainland with great infrastructure. In a similar way Krk Island was opened up.

The government needs to give these projects priority as it will revive the isolated coastal towns and islands. I smell a big real estate boom in Croatia and a big population increase as a result of this.

Croatia's longest bridge commences construction ...

The long awaited Peljesac Bridge has commence construction. The bridge is over 2.2 km in length and will be one of the worlds longest upon completion.

Here is some idea of its design scanned from a magazine .....

This is the location of the new bridge .....

Astro boy thanks for the pictures of the "dubrovnik bridge".

I used that bridge in jan-feb of this year, going to dubrovnik during the festival of the patron saint of the city, I found the bridge, definately a great bridge, cutting travel time. One question though, is it actually called the "dubrovnik bridge"? Because if I remember correctly I think the sign on the bridge was said it was the "tudjman" bridge (most).

Such insanity, but yes it was named after the ex-president.

This bridge will form part of the Split - Dubrovnik motorway. The construction of the bridge has delayed travel time for motorists by about 45 minutes. Previously travel involved driving the whole perimetre of the bay on the western approaches to the city of Dubrovnik ...

sorry sincity for quoting somethine like 9 months old, but how in gods name will this bridge be able to be part of the Split-Dubrovnik motorway? This bridge is only 2 lanes wide!

unless they want to build an identical-looking bridge right next to it (kinda like the new bay bridge UC in SF right now lol), they're most likely gonna build one of those motorways-on-stilts that will stradle the steep mountains further east from here. kinda like the Alpine motorways in Austria and Italy.

they may also go for the subaqueous tunnel approach. like this, the provincials who live on Peljesac and Korcula wont bitch about "some lump of steel and concrete" "messing up their view" and "stopping them from fishing on their favorite spot"....

Dont start me on the Korculani. There are more of them here in Sydney than on the island of Korcula itself.

Anyway, i dont think the Dubrovnik bridge forms part of the new motorway. The same thing happened in Zadar. There are now 2 new Maslenica Bridges over the gulf. One for the motorway (4 lanes) and the rebuilt one destroyed in the war which is for local traffic and is less than 100m away from the motorway one. the rebuilt one is only double lanes if I remember.

please, don't qutoe 10 pics just to put smiley!

about Dubrovnik bridge: it is not going to be a part of motorway! motorway shall finish north from dubrovnik, in Osojnik. and it has 2 names: Dubrovnik bridge and Franjo Tudjman bridge (because some people wanted first name, some wanted second, so they have both).

about Pelješac bridge: the project is great, buit BIH government is making troubles because they say that our bridge shall close their acces to see. Non sense. Bridge is high ebough for ships, but large ships anyway cannot even enter to that bay because it is too shallow. I'd say they afe jelaous on croatian superb road projects.

About Krk bridge - I've noticed that some people say Krka bridge, but it is different. Krk bridge is this one with 2 arcs, Krka is new bridge on A1 motorway above city Skradin!

here are some my pics: first is allready mentioned bridge (in 1st post) in Slunj above river Korana. Second and third are not very good pictures of bridge above river Drava near Repaš. Interesting: the bridge doesn't carry only the road, but also oil pipeway (you can see it).

So its called the dubrovnik AND Franjo tudjman bridge?

I say the BiH government has nothing to whine about, I stayed at Neum over February this year, great views, relaxed seaside resort type of town BUT there are hardly any ships in the first place at NEUM in the first place, just tiny little boats!!!! Why is all this "hoo haa" being made?

theyre bitching because the only coastal tourism they get (from croats and other western europeans such as osterreichers/deutschlanders/italianos) will get nullified by the construction of this bridge.

The only reason Neum even exists is because of foreigners buying chips/drinks and filling up with gas as they drive south to Dubrovnik. its just an intrusive, benign tumor, being fed by the artery that is the way to Dubrovnik.

Thanks X-Type for the pics.

Most people in Bosnia dont care for Croatia's new bridge because most dont care to visit Neum. Its merely a handful of politicians in Bosnia trying to kick up a stink at Croatia's expense by using the new bridge as some sort of political leverage. This is such a pity because it may lead to poor relations between the 2 countries.

Bosnia's coastline is only 20kms short. It doesnt sit on open seas as its blocked in by Croatian mainland on both sides. Neum has never been a port and its very shallow. It would take huge resources to make it deep enough for some sort of cargo ships to dock. Its also closed off by Croatian waters.

This bridge is important to the territorial continuity of Croatia without having to pass through a neighbouring country, which if Bosnia wanted to, could close off all road traffic with ease towards southern Croatia.

The new bridge meets all standards for access as outlined by international law.
