Ria Pertiwi to develop living facilities for UUM
Published: 2011/04/28
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...cle/index_html

Ria Pertiwi Sdn Bhd today signed a memorandum of understanding with Uniutama Holdings Sdn Bhd to develop accommodation facilities for Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)'s international students.

The proposed development, estimated to cost about RM100 million, is planned over a 13.35 hectare site near UUM's main campus in Sintok, Kedah.

Ria Pertiwi Executive Chairman Datuk Ahmad Faizal Datuk Wira Jaafar said the project was expected to commence construction in July and be completed within 24 months.

"A two acre park, which will be planted with local fruits, will become a unique feature at the facility," he said after the signing ceremony today.

The development will include nine blocks of furnished apartment type hostels for 2,000 students, a multi-purpose hall, cafeteria, surau, student centre and sports facilities.

Under the agreement, Uniutama, which has a 25-year concession to design, build, operate and lease the project, will transfer the concession rights to Ria Pertiwi to build the facility, upon the approval of UUM. - Bernama

ALOR SETAR: Kedah Umno is making available free Internet facility at state assemblymen’s service centres throughout Kedah.

Kedah Umno liaison chief Datuk Bashah Md Hanipah said the initiative was meant for the public, especially school children.

“The students will be able to access education portals to get accurate information quickly, just like their counterparts in other countries,” he told reporters after distributing 1Malaysia computers to 389 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tunku Abdul Rahman here yesterday.

He urged telecommunication service providers to widen broadband services to include more locations in rural areas to enable residents to access the Internet.

In addition, he said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission would distribute 30,000 1Malaysia computers to 178 secondary schools in Kedah from yesterday till June. — Bernama

Solar-powered hypermart
Saturday May 7, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...5741&sec=North

Latest outlet: The newly opened Tesco hypermarket in Kulim.

THE RM70mil new Tesco hypermarket in Kulim, Kedah, features a solar power system capable of reducing carbon emissions of more than three tonnes per year to the environment.

Tesco Stores Malaysia chief operating officer Tim Golding said in a press release that the grid-connected solar photovoltaic system generated some 45,600kW of electricity per year.

“This is our first solar-powered hypermarket, which is also the 39th Tesco store in Malaysia. The system cost about RM400,000 to install and can support the power needs of six medium-sized households for an entire year.

“The generation of 45,600kW of electricity translates into a reduction of more than three tonnes of carbon emissions per year,” he said.

Golding said the installation of the solar system in Tesco Kulim was the result of Tesco’s participation in the Suria 1000 Programme, a scheme under the Federal Government’s Malaysia Building Integrated Photovoltaic (MBIPV) project to encourage and support building owners in the generating of their own electricity from solar energy.

“Tesco will continue to up the ante in building environmentally-friendly stores. The energy-saving innovation is focused on lighting, water consumption, air-conditioning, refrigeration and architecture design,” he said.

“It is a natural evolution for us to adopt solar energy in our stores and we are pleased that our brand-new Tesco Kulim will be an important model for our stores in Malaysia.

“We have been steadfast in our aim to mobilise the collective strength of our customers, suppliers and stakeholders to help protect the environment and combat climate change, but we believe that the best way to achieve this is to lead by example.”

On the company’s expansion in Kedah, Golding said Tesco was happy to be in Kulim.

“As a result of the overall national growth and prosperity, the state, including this town, holds much potential for retailers like Tesco.

“The opening of our hypermarket in Kulim has created over 400 job opportunities for the local community,” he added.

Tesco Kulim is built at a cost of close to RM70 million and has a sales floor area of 6,200sq m and a mall area of about 8,500sq m.

“The hypermarket also has more than 800 parking bays for the convenience of its shoppers,” Golding said.

As part of its commitment to the environment, Tesco Malaysia has earlier introduced a range of alternative carrier bags for customers.

“Customers are also rewarded with Tesco Green Clubcard points each time they use their own bags or the Tesco reusable bags available at all Tesco stores.

“Our first recycling centre at Tesco Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, was launched in May 2008. Tesco Malaysia today has recycling centres at 12 of its stores,” added Golding.

Kulim to renovate 60 KFC, Pizza Hut outlets
Published: 2011/06/23
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...cle/index_html

Kulim (M) Bhd will renovate and refurbish 60 restaurants nationwide to enhance the customer experience and strengthen its
food and restaurant operations.

Its chairman, Kamaruzzaman Abu Kassim, said it would involve 40 KFC and 20 Pizza Hut restaurants.

He said the renovation and refurbishment would depend on the location of the particular restaurant to meet competition not only from other fast-food restaurants but also other food outlets or eateries.

"This is a requirement for us to do every five years and we are going to spend RM24 million (RM400,000 per oulet) on renovation and refurbishment," he told a media briefing after the company's annual general meeting today.

He said Kulim would also convert 80 of its 220 Pizza Hut restaurants into Pizza Hut Delivery outlets.

The company had converted 25 so far and expected to convert 15 more by year-end, he said.

"With the conversion, Pizza Hut could guarantee not more than 30 minutes fast delivery of its products," he said. -- Bernama

Kulim Hi-Tech Park jointly plans Zambia's special economic zone
Published: Monday June 20, 2011 MYT 12:03:00 PM
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...&if_height=597

PUTRAJAYA: Zambia is constructing a special economic zone planned by Malaysia's Kulim Hi-Tech Park and Japan International Cooperation Agency, said its Finance and National Planning Minister, Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane.

He said the economic zone was the result of learning from countries like Malaysia to develop Zambia as a middle- income country, adding that the country is now ready to receive business investments from Malaysia.

“At a time when Malaysia was poor, business communities from America and Japan took the risk to come and invest here. I believe that Africa, especially Zambia, is ready to give them investment opportunities,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Langkawi International Dialogue (LID) 2011 here.

The 1,700 hectare-Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah is the first high-technology industrial park in Malaysia.

It targets technology-related industries, primarily in the fields of advanced electronics, telecommunications, biotechnology, advanced materials, research and development and emerging technologies.

Musokotwane said the openness and business practice learnt from Malaysia had yielded positive results in foreign direct investments to his country.

“We have since received about US$5bil (RM15bil) in investments in the mining sector, and also major investments as a result of opening up to countries like Japan.

“There is a factory currently under construction by Hitachi to fabricate heavy equipment spare parts for other African countries like Congo, Tanzania and Angola,” he added.

Musokotwane also disclosed that a Malaysian Islamic banking institution had been given a licence to operate in Zambia.

Agreeing with LID founder and Malaysia's former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the World Bank should focus more on African countries, he said the bank should help those countries create infrastructures that would leverage their private sector, rather than focusing on small projects.

“In Zambia, we have vast land suitable for agriculture but for this land to be productive, it requires electricity, dams and roads for use by the farmers.

“I believe this is the test that the World Bank should focus on,” he said.

Meanwhile, land-locked Lesotho is giving utmost priority to education to generate skilled graduates and help eradicate poverty, its Prime Minister, Pakalitha Bethuel Mosisili, said.

Emphasising that education was the best way to improve the living standards of his people, he said:

“The best practice is education, education, education but not education for the sake of education, over and above that skills”.

He said education, which contributed to human capital development, was vital for its people as it could pave the way to create jobs in the country and promote entrepreneurship.

“With education, people graduating from our institutions will not leave the country to seek jobs but (instead) create jobs as they have the skills.

“For example, by starting up businesses in the country that would create job opportunities,” Mosisili told Bernama after taking part in a panel discussion on “Poverty Eradication” at the ongoing Langkawi International Dialogue on Sunday.

He said Malaysia's Limkokwing University, which has a campus in Lesotho, was a major investor in the country, as well as in terms of human capital development.

Limkokwing University also has campuses in Botswana and Swaziland.

Meanwhile, Mosisili said trade was also a platform that could help uplift the economic status of his nation.-Bernama

Kedah Cooperatives Being Encouraged To Go Into Hotel Industry
June 25, 2011 18:13 PM
http://www.bernama.com/bernama/state...=596732&cat=nt

LANGKAWI, June 25 (Bernama) -- The Cooperatives Commission of Malaysia is encouraging cooperatives to be involved in tourism, especially in providing lodgings.

Kedah Cooperatives Commission director Zainun Hamzan Stapa said Saturday that the cooperatives could provide hotels and guesthouses and, in rural areas, organise homestays.

"To date, two cooperatives in Kedah have gone into the hotel business to improve their income," he told reporters after presenting a RM1 million cheque to the Langkawi District Development Cooperative here.

The money is a loan from the commission to enable the cooperative to buy a building to be converted into a hotel at Langkawi Mall in Kuah here.

Another cooperative, the Kedah Malay Teachers Cooperative, runs a 40-room guesthouse in Jitra.

Zainun believed that the hotel industry in Kedah would grow because of the demand for accommodation for both domestic and foreign tourists.

He said the commission also encouraged mosque committees to set up cooperatives, and three of them had done so.

He said that there are 707 cooperatives with membership totalling more than 300,000 in Kedah whose business transactions last year amounted to RM196 million.

‘Belanda Timur’ hampir jadi kenyataan: MB

Demikian antara ucapan perasmian Menteri Besar , YAB Dato’ Seri Ustaz Azizan Abdul Razak sempena Pelancaran Kempen Pemulihan Dusun Buah-Buahan Peringkat Negeri Kedah.

MADA peroleh RM2.2b naik taraf insfrastruktur

"Tetapi sekarang hanya tinggal 10 peratus sahaja petani miskin kita percaya melalui pelbagai sokongan kerajaan pusat MADA mampu membantu golongan ini sekali gus memastikan tiada lagi petani miskin," katanya.

Menurut Mohd.

JITRA, July 29 (Bernama) -- Programmes carried out by the Kedah Federal Action Council (MTPNK) have succeeded in bringing out 1,940 households out of the vicious circle of poverty last year.

Its chairman, Datuk Wira Mohd Johari Baharom, said the poverty eradication programmes, as well as uplifting the socio-economic standard of the Kedah people, were important agenda for the federal government.

"The success of all federal departments and agencies in Kedah in meeting the target to achieve zero hardcore poor reflects the federal government's commitment in ensuring sustainable life for the people in the state," he said at a dinner with the Prime Minister here Thursday night.

The dinner, held in conjunction with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's visit to the state Thursday, was attended by about 2,000 guests. Also present was Najib's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Mohd Johari, who is Deputy Agriculture and Agrobased Industry Minister, said that based on the e-kasih data, there were still 17,912 households in need on government's attention as of July 20 this year.

He said various programmes would be carried out by the federal government to help them.

Based on the e-kasih list, there are still 75 hardcore poor households and 1,044 poor families in need of aid under the "Program Bantuan Rumah" (PBR) this year, he added.

Kedah tables bigger Budget of over RM1bil
Wednesday November 16, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...0165&sec=North

ALOR SETAR: Kedah has proposed a Budget totalling RM1.008bil for 2012, an increase of RM120mil from this year’s, with a deficit of about RM19mil.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said RM570mil of the allocation would be used for management expenses, RM259mil for development and RM179mil for water supply.

Azizan said the Budget 2012 was proposed based on the uncertainty in the global economy.

He said the state revenue was expected to increase by 5.61% next year to RM550.8mil compared to RM521.5mil this year, which includes revenue from iron ore mining in several districts.

Azizan said the state was confident of achieving the revenue collection based on its good track record since 2007.

“Our revenue collection record has increased every year from 78.9% in 2007 to 91.96% last year,” he said.

Azizan said the state allocated RM15.2mil for flood mitigation projects, management and upgrading of rivers and canals in an effort to prevent flash floods.

He said the state would also build affordable homes for 25,000 families in low-income group.

He said the state had also set up a special task force to help coordinate and restructure the Pantai Cenang development project as agreed by the Federal Government under its RM420mil budget to develop the island.

Najib apologises for BN’s mistakes in last election
Updated: Saturday March 3, 2012 MYT 7:25:06 PM
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...446&sec=nation

Quote:
"We promise a transformation for the people of Malaysia and Kedah. The journey has begun."
BALING: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak extended an apology to the people on behalf of the Barisan Nasional for the coalition's mistakes in the last general election, which cost it several electoral seats and states including Kedah.

He said Saturday that Barisan would rectify the mistakes and make it up by serving the people as best as it could.

"I believe that we should not be arrogant. In a parliamentary democracy, we have to subject ourselves to the power of the people.

“We must have made mistakes for the people to have rejected us. We apologise for our past mistakes. The victors apologise, as do the losers," he said at a meet-the-people session at the Kuala Ketil public field near here.

The voters' rejection of the Barisan, like in Kedah, was in a way due to the mistakes made by the coalition, he said.

The prime minister said Barisan would learn from the mistakes and rise again.

"Let the past remain just that. We promise a transformation for the people of Malaysia, and Kedah. The journey has begun," he said.

Najib said that only the Barisan can provide the people with a good future.

"Our plans are clear. We have a well-organised agenda, we have a roadmap, we have facts and figures. Sufficient statistics to drive change, to take the nation towards realisation of a progressive high-income country. This is unlike the Buku Jingga (of the opposition plans)," he said.

He said the government wanted to send the signal and provide a clear picture that it is close to bringing about a transformation that will give great benefits to the people.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom, Kedah Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, Kedah Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim, Baling Umno Division chief Datuk Abdul Azeez Rahim and Sik Umno Division chief Datuk Tajuddin Abdullah were also present at the event. - Bernama
