Is it true that Russian airlines have to have certain numbers of Russian made aircrafts? hence, Aeroflot keeping Il-96?

SSJ is a modern aircraft so no biggie but Il-96 from what I hear burns A LOT of gas.

Aeroflot's fleet average age is 4 years, S7 also is not old, so it is quite wrong impression.

It's just you.

Look at some of the old aircraft in US airline fleets.

Aeroflot, Transaero, UTair, S7 have all pretty new fleet, at least newer than some US or European airlines.

NOTE:

Aeroflot’s fleet, which is among Europe’s most modern, youngest and fastest growing, consists of 116 aircrafts, with its backbone formed by modern Airbus A320-family, A330 and Boeing B767 airliners.

In 2007, Aeroflot signed multi-billion US dollar deals to buy 22 Boeing B787 Dreamliners, with start since 2016, and 22 Airbus A350 jets since 2018.

In 2008, Aeroflot started receiving Airbus A330 aircraft, which are dramatically enhanced the airline’s long-haul capabilities and standard of service.

In 2011, Aeroflot and Boeing announced orders for 16 Boeing B777-300ERs and B777-200ERs.

In June 2011, Aeroflot received its first Sukhoi SuperJet-100s, a new-generations Russian-built aircraft (the airline has 30 SSJ-100 regional jets on order, plus intent to buy 10 more). Aeroflot Group, considering its growth prospects, is to acquire the total of 126 modern Russian-built aircraft of various types through 2020.

S7 Airlines has one of the youngest and most modern fleets in the Russian air carriage market. The average age of the aircraft is eight years and all are of foreign construction, manufactured by Airbus and Boeing. The fleet consists of thirty-three aircraft: 20 - Airbus A319s,10 - Airbus A320s, 1 - Airbus A310 and 2 - long-distance Boeing 767-300s.

Record number of routes in Transaero summer schedule 2012

In a summer season 2012 Transaero offers an extensive program of flights which testifies to an airline sustainable development, expansion of its routing network and increase in volumes of transportations on in-Russian, and also business and tourist international directions.

In summer season Transaero will carry out flights on more than 160 routes. This record number of directions for all company history which on 24 % surpasses an indicator of the summer period of last year.

The basic distinctive features of the forthcoming summer program become:

Essential increase in number of direct international routes from regions of Russia, passing the airports of Moscow and St.-Petersburg. In a summer season their number will make 40 that three times more than in a summer season 2011. For example, the program of flights to Barcelona will be carried out at once from 13 Russian regions, to Bangkok - from nine, to Cyprus – from eight. For the first time airline will open international flights from such cities, as Arkhangelsk, Volgograd, Nizhni Novgorod, Tyumen.

The start of Transaero flights from all three airports of the Moscow – Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. Transaero for the first time will start to carry out flights from Vnukovo. Today passengers can already buy tickets for Transaero flights out of VKO to Blagoveshchensk, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskij, Tel Aviv.

Expansion of the flight program from St.-Petersburg. More and more actively from Northern capital flights will be carried out by planes of raised capacity Boeing 747. In this season flights from Pulkovo to Burgas and Varna (Bulgaria) and Kefaloniju (Greece) become new. Volumes of transportations to Turkish Antalia and the Greek Rhodes will essentially increase. Regular flights in Tokyo will renew.

Increase in volumes of transportations at the Far East. Flights will be carried out on 12 routes. On these directions Transaero will actively maintain Boeing 747 and Boeing 777. Flights to the Far East from the Moscow airport Vnukovo become additional to what are traditionally carried out by the company from Domodedovo.

Opening of regular flights from Moscow to Los Angeles and increase in volume of transportations to the USA. Flights to Los Angeles will be carried out starting April, 29th two times a week by Boeing 777. On this direction passengers can use services of Imperial class.

As to flights to New York, starting June they will become daily. Thus, Transaero will carry out, for the first time, flights at once to three cities in USA – New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

Transaero will continue to carry out during the summer period flights to popular exotic routes: to Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Cancun (Mexico), to Punta-Cana (Dominican Republic), Varadero (Cuba), Goa (India), Bangkok and Phuket (Thailand), Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), Denpasar (Indonesia).
