Quite a remarkable process is currently underway in Russia. Aeroflot is getting rid of Ilyushin Il-96 planes. I gave her a small tribute in the Russian section and thought maybe it would be interesting for somebody here as well.
For those of you who don't know, Il-96 is the second and the last Soviet wide-body airliner. Commercial jets of this time (late 80's - early 90's) are generally labelled stillborn as they were ill-fated enough to be developed during a severe economic crisis Russia was going through.
Anyway, Aeroflot currently operates 6 of these planes. The youngest of them is already 19 and the oldest is about to turn 23 which is contrary to quite young fleet of Aeroflot. This one is the oldest one circa 1991, just a few months after her maiden flight:

Il-96 entered into service with SU in 1993. In spite of this fact the picture below was really common for Aeroflot's main hub in Moscow in mid-90's:

Fortunately Aeroflot was able to put all its aircraft in operation with the 6th and the last one delivered in 1996:

At first Aeroflot operated them mostly on international routes like NY:

LA

Sydney

Hong Kong and lots of other destinations

In 2003 Aeroflot launched its rebranding campaign introducing a new color scheme. All aircraft were named after Russia's outstanding pilots: Chkalov, Moiseyev, Kokkinaki, Gromov, Mayorov, and Karpeev.

In 2005 Il-96 had a near-death experience as ban was put on her operation. This ban was a result of a gear failure with the presidental Il-96. There was a concern that Aeroflot was considering taking Ilyushin out of service on the spot. In 42 days the ban was lifted and SU resumed their operation. By 2010 the 6 aircraft combined ran ~270 thousand hours.

In 2008 and 2010 SU got rid of Tu-134s and Tu-154s respectively, thus leaving Il-96 as the only Russian-made airliner in their fleet:

She was alone until june 2011 when the first SSJs began to enter service with SU.

Throughout the years of operation Il-96 proved to be quite a reliable and comfortable plane. She has no history of deadly accidents whether with SU or with any other airline. But she's no match to A330 and 777 in terms of opeartion costs. This and the fact that it's getting really old are the reasons why she has to go. It's gonna be a while now before we see Russian-made wide-body jet in Aeroflot. Now it's all about Airbus and Boeing.

Wow i didnt know Aeroflot operated to SYD once a upon a time especially with the Ilyushin. That must have been a hell of a ride. Which city did they stop in during the stop over? It would be cool for Aeroflot to return to SYD.

Well, actually SU never operated regular flights on SVO-SYD route, only on charter/special occasions. The photo above was made during the 2000 Olympcis where Aerolfot was official carrier for Russia's Olympic team for instance. Back then they flew via DMK.

As for regular service, i don't see it happening in the near future. Sadly, Australia is not among the most popular touristic/business destinations with the Russians. It's a shame though because SVO-SYD would leave Aeroflot's current longest flight to Cancun far behind. It would actually be the longest flight Aeroflot ever operated.
