Spring in Riga 2011

This week I took shots in Riga centre parks which are being painted in light green colors by the Great Master Spring.

Riga canal like a snake is winding through Riga centre, providing many great options for photographing nice landscapes...

...and also relaxing on canal's banks...

...which not only Rigans do but also tourists. Here 2 of them are eating sandwich and exploring Riga map while omnipresent pigeons hoping to get some meal from sandwich crumbs:

Pigeons are not only birds you can observe in Riga in large numbers. Riga is close to seaside, that's why sea-gulls here are also many. One of them broke into this shot and in result made it into quite unusual photo:

Pigeon's conference

Spring and Boulevard Ring [architecture] goes along together very well. Not only phonetically

People on one of canal bridges

Together with Liberty monument (on right side)

Liberty monument much closer - Mother Latvia holding 3 stars

Pure green

A bit of pink

A bit spicy advertisement.. But actually it's just advertising fashion goods.

Facades surrounded by freshly green leafs

No, I'm not advertising Narvesen here Just it makes good composition accents in both of these shots

When looking from almost the same place to 2 almost opposite sides, top of 2 Soviet time highrises are noticeable. One is 60ies modernism...

...and another - 50ies Stalinism:

City's fountains are not switched on yet:

Student going into University of Latvia main building...

...while another one (supposedly student too) has gave up with the papers on the canal bank. This is a tough time for students - especially those who finish bachelor or Msc degrees (not even talking about doctors)

University and canal bank together:

While some are killing themselves with learning, others do much more enjoyable things...

These trams will still run some time, but they are already endangered phenomenon - modern ones haves started to replace them, and exactly on this route old trams will disappear soon completely.

What he is looking at?

To this blossoming tre[/B]

Composition of lanterns and road sign

Another lantern on the facade of France embassy

Bastejkalns is a hill which creates another nice landscaping feature in Riga centre parks

Happened to be in the right place at the right time - when next Latvian "blockbuster" was filmed in Bastejkalns park. Film "Dream Team 1935" will be about first European champions in basketball which were Latvians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EuroBasket_1935). These guys (apparently actors who play "Dream Team" basketball players) were running over the canal bridge some 4 or 5 times until the scene were shot.

People, of course, were stopped to come to the bridge but in one moment, fast moving trishaw rapidly broke into the scene... Filming assistant screamed "Stop! Stop!" and trishaw, of course, didn't understood why. Finally assistant realized that it would took a lot more time for trishaw to turn round than cross a bridge and said: "Ok, drive over, but fast!"

Filming crew checking the result.

Weird shot - first green leafs together with last snow. In winter, snow mountains were shoveled off streets to centre parks, that's why some of this pressed snow has endured this long...

Bicyclists now are so many in Riga that I (also bicyclist) feel more endangered by them than by cars... This week almost collided with 2 fellow pedallers. But of course, not the bicyclists are to blame (well, sometimes, they too) but inappropriate infrastructure for us. Riga is building some bicycle roads but many places on them are not safe and comfortable at all.

Concentrated

Another "sweet couple"

Lunapark in Esplanāde park has made a lot of controversy in last weeks here. This is first time when such lunapark is set up right in the middle in Riga centre - previously they were installed on outer districts besides some shopping malls.

Some politicians and people say it's unacceptable to have such lunapark in one of centre's square, btw, right next to Orthodox church. Is it only our provincialism or rather otherwise - provincialism is to have such lunapark? What would you think when something similar would be set on square at Notre Dame in Paris or Berlin Cathedral?

In case, if you get bored of pictures from steril environment of Riga centre parks, here 2 shots of spring in Soviet face of Riga, Imanta neighbourhood:

Once mighty RRR (Riga Radiotechnics Factory) now is just a huge abandoned building (and similar story goes on about many other ex-soviet industries) together with Imanta power plant chimney

Typical 9-floor commieblock building in Imanta. Green balconies in harmony with green tree

Thanks for watching!

Wonderful thread and wonderful to describe your walk!!!!

You should write books with stories and pictures.
