SAAF Museum airshow Saturday 21 May 2011

The South African Air Force Museum will be hosting the first airshow of the year in Pretoria , just few months before AFB Waterkloof airshow. It will be held at Swartkop Airfield alongside Old Johannesburg road in Valhalla, Pretoria , on 21 May 2011 from 09h30 to 18h00. The theme of this airshow is ‘from Canvas to Jets’. The theme was chosen to highlight the differences between the old aircraft that flew at the Swartkop Airfield and the current new types of jets. The SAAF’s first airfield, Swartkop Air Force Base grew from a few canvas hangars to many modified hangars. Swartkop is the world’s oldest Air Force Base still in operational use and this year is Zwartkop’s 90th anniversary.

In addition, the airshow which is open to the public does much to promote the SAAF and the SAAF Museum outside of civilian airshow participation. Gates will open at 07h00 and flying starts at 09h30 and continues till approximately 18h00. Entrance fee at the gate is R40 per person (adults). Children under the age of 16 years enter free. As part of the community build project or an impact on society; churches, charity organisations and schools have an opportunity to sell airshow tickets on behalf of the SAAF Museum , as a result of that they will get a profit of R5 for each ticket sold.

From CAPITAL SOUNDS FB page

New Hi Tech Comms for Airshows in Africa. After seeing Safety and Flight Directors battle at airshows with radio comms Capitals Electronic Team have built a system that works. This new system has two airband and a vhf high band all interlinked. The system also has an intercom so that the safety team can work without distraction. It has been well tested and will be used at the Swartkops and Rand Airshows.

From SABC News

Packed Swartkop air show thrills over 40 000
May 22 2011, 5:07:00

By Janet Szabó

Perfect weather and the prospect of vintage and modern aircraft being put through their paces drew thousands of enthusiasts to Swartkop Air Field in Pretoria yesterday for the first major air show of 2011 hosted by the South African Air Force Museum.

Opening the show, Brigadier General Lennox Mzongwana took the salute on behalf of the Chief of the SAAF and received the traditional scroll from the Special Forces parachute team. This set the scene for what commentator Brian Emmenis appropriately termed an “air show South Africans will remember for a very long time”.

The skies over Swartkop reverberated to the sound of radial engines as the Harvards performed the "Tora, Tora’ Tora" routine –from the classic film of the same name about the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour - accompanied by pyrotechnics supplied by the engineer corps.

However, this was outdone by the mini war capability demonstration, which according to Emmenis was comparable to those held at the Roodewal and De Brug test ranges. This featured among others paratroopers, a helicopter assault which included two Rooivalk attack helicopters and a ground assault with armoured vehicles.

The Officer Commanding Swartkop, Lieutenant Colonel Willie Nel, dedicated this event to Lieutenant Colonel Norman Gephardt, who had been a reserve force member and volunteer at the museum until his recent death.

Thrill

The programme also included two unexpected flypasts – first an A380 Airbus belonging to Lufthansa and then an Air France passenger jet. The Silver Falcons, the SAAF aerobatics team, proved to be immensely popular with the crowds and their first appearance at the show was in the company of an SAA 737-800.

The SAAF Museum, as part of its programme to increase aviation awareness, invited 10 parties of school children to not only experience the thrill of the air show, but also to gain a better understanding of the SAAF and its requirements.

The South African Military Health Services and the South African Army exhibited their services. Major Ronel Prinsloo, one of the organisers, said that about 45 000 people came to the air show and that the SAAF were very happy with the turnout.

Organising an event of this nature took a dedicated team and a lot of planning as it involved arranging not only the flying programme and logistics but also the public participation and co-ordination with different bodies such as the South African Police and the Tshwane Municipality; after one air show they were already planning the next.

The 2011 organising team consisted of 52 SAAF staff, most of them from the museum. The fact that about two-thirds of the museum staff is either retired or reserve force members, with limited time to offer, made organizing the show more challenging.

The next major air show will take place at Pretoria’s Waterkloof Air Force Base on 1 October. This has been billed as a dress rehearsal for the 2012 Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo (AAD) when it returns to Waterkloof after an eight-year absence.

Wonderboom Airshow

The air displays promise to be breathtaking, and static displays of rarely seen aircraft guarantee a spectacular day for spectators and aviation enthusiasts. A big thrill will be the landing of an aircraft on a vehicle. The air displays will be performed by seasoned pilots, and the popular Brian Emmenis and his team will entertain the crowds with their running commentaries on the displays.Visitors will be taken on helicopter flips and invited to sit in the cockpits of some of the aircraft on display. The fly-out of the approximately 300 visiting aircraft at the end of the day will certainly be a highlight, as will be the fireworks display to end off the show. The gates open at 07:00 and the show is on from 10:00 to 17:00. However, the day's festivities do not end there because rugby will be shown on big screens afterwards.
Admission is R40 and children under 12 pay R20. Please leave your pets at home. For general information please call Wonderboom Airport Management on 012 5671 188
