I think I almost went to that skybar in Sampa, but you had to pay a fairly hefty amount minimum charge to get up there, and all I wanted to do was snap a pic or two!

I have such fond memories of cold beers in Sao Paulo bars! I asked these guys in Bom Clima if they minded my taking a photo and they were completely cool with it:

my favourite beer, Bohemia. Very civilized in Brazil, you can drink anywhere you want. I was sipping this frosty in the departure lounge waiting sadly
for my flight home:

inside one of the many Churrascarias that Brazil is famous for!

oh no... now I want to go back to Brazil IMMEDIATELY!!

hehe.... I like small, dumpy bars and pubs the best! That is where people are the most friendly!
Here is the view from a posh rooftop bar here in Toronto, with a swimming pool:

I'm very thirsty now. Will have to go down to the.... pub.

Here's some I could find on my photostream from Melbourne, Australia:

Small pub on Greville St Prahran.

The Mitre Tavern in Bank Place. My family used to own this pub a long time ago.

The Espy. One of Melb's best rock pubs.

Nice!
I particularly liked the Mitre Pub.

Those laneway pubs are sort similar to what we would call back patios, I suppose....

More from Melbourne.
Cherry Bar in AC/DC lane, a sleazy rock'roll' venue. apparently Neol Gallager liked it so much when visiting Australia he wanted to buy it.

Further down the lane, under the pointing lady is 24 Moons, a more upmarket cocktail bar. up a flight of stairs past the bins.

On the roof of Curtin house is Rooftop Bar and outdoor cinema

In another laneway on the other side of the city is Sister Bella, coffee by day and drinks at night.

Croft Instutute in Chinatown serves drinks in medical beakers

and Von Hous is a small Wine bar in one of the cities oldest buildings

Of course the city has plenty of more tradional Australian pubs, as well as a couple the 'British style fake pubs' that seem to dominate North American cities.
Imperial Hotel, Spring St

napier hotel, Fitzroy

Exford Hotel

Elephant and Wheelbarrow, a chain pub.

Oakleigh Junction Hotel, pretty typical suburban pub/pokies venue

Marquis of Lorne, Fitzroy
image hosted on flickr

The Royal Artillery Hotel, or 'Arthouse' was a popular punk/hardcore music venue till it recently closed down.

Perserverance Hotel, Fitzroy

Heinold's First And Last Chance Saloon located at Oakland's Jack London Square.

That's not the camera angle. The bar is actually like this in real life.

Interesting pictures from Melbourne. What's the difference between a typical Australian pub and an English pub?

Age would be a big one. This is the pub I was in today:

Yes age is one thing. and the interiors of many Aussie pubs would be more Victorian or of a later perioid, many with 60's or 70's makeovers, as opposed to the somewhat older feel of many English Pubs. Beer is different too, Lagers are more common than Ales on tap, though Australian beer is definatly not like those weak American beers!
Adaptions to local climate like elaborate verandahs and tiled interiors, and in older pubs a bigger emphasis on accomodation (at least at the time they were built), hence the 'Hotel' in many names.
I'm sure theres more things. I think you'd have to try both types of pubs in person to really tell the differences, hard work

I'll be willing to bet Australia had similar old liquor laws to Canada at one time, when pretty much only Hotels (or "taverns" as they were sometimes called) were allowed to have bars. I heard, not that many years ago in Sydney a person had to order food along with alcohol, which is the way it was in parts of Canada a long time ago, too.

By the way, British style pubs don't "dominate" North American cities. They are simply the type of pub that I personally enjoy, that is why my photos were mostly of that type. There are 8000 bars and restaurants in Toronto, and the traditional style English pub does not "dominate" the scene! But if you are saying there are only two British style pubs in the city of Melbourne then definitely they are more popular here than there.
