Looks like it won't take long for Shanghai Tower to creep up on 1WTC.

@culwulla, I always follow your diagram updates and may I say it's very enlightening. Could you please include the Petronas Towers in it as a point of comparison? Thanx and more power!

No, but whereas its taken WTC the better part of 4 years to reach 200-odd metres (about 2 years of at grade and above work), it's taken Shanghai Tower about half that. I have a feeling it will surpass it before WTC tops out. Naturally WTC will finish first though since it is much shorter.

what has been the underlining factor for the huge increase in supertall construction over the past decade?

1WTC will be 1,000 feet before the year is out. The only thing tall about Shanghai tower right now is the core. I'm not impressed by that, I'll be impress when I see more steel.

WTC1 is a great project, but how anyone can fail to be impressed with the shanghai tower is beyond me.

I didn't say I wasn't impress by the building. I'm not impress with the progress. The core first method does nothing for me sorry.

At one point it had a spire. So it would be taller than the Chicago Spire. But Chicago Spire went the way of the Dodo, so did pentominium spire.

I'm very impressed by Shanghai Tower's core alone! The rest will be utterly amazing. But maybe more so by next year.

I'm a little jaded. In NYC you never see the core go up first.
Next time I go to the Shanghia Tower thread, it might be finish lol.

Because of the sheer size and "exo-skeleton" structure it needs to be a core first progress to build off of it for each mechanical ring. If I recall 1WTC has a tube style of core which requires a different building process.

If you look at any of the resent project in NYC. You'll see none of them, have went up core first. Beekman, BOA, Times, 7WtC, 4WTC and Carnegie 57. And I all ways wonder why.
