SKP | Skopje International Airport

Skopje airport upgrade is in progress with a new passenger and cargo terminals, firefighting building, control tower and extending the runaway.

TAV Airports said it has completed renovation work at Ohrid Airport and vowed that the new passenger terminal at Skopje will be completed in the fourth quarter. The Turkish airports operator won a 20-year concession to manage the two Macedonian airports in 2008, committing to a €200 million investment program.
At SKP, TAV is extending the runway by 500 m., expanding the apron, building a new 40,000-sq.-m. passenger terminal, a 5,000-sq.-m. administration building and new parking facilities. All told, the expansion will increase the capacity of the airport to 3 million passengers per year. It also is making improvements to the cargo infrastructure with the aim of elevating Skopje into a transit and cargo hub for southeast Europe.

Works should be done by 08. September 2011.

Yeah the works should be done by 8 of September which indeed its fast. Also number of passengers is rising up as new flights were introduced also some cheap ones like WizzAir and FlyNiki which is a very good step along with the new terminal. And for sure one of the largest terminals in the region.

The final countdown
Grand opening next week

Next Tuesday the new terminal building at Skopje’s Alexander the Great Airport will open. New details are now emerging regarding the grand opening on September 6. The opening ceremony will take place at 13.30. Turkish Airlines is chartering a special flight to the Macedonian capital on Tuesday carrying members of the Turkish Government and businessmen. Shortly after, Turkish’s scheduled service from Istanbul will touch down in Skopje together with the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who will open the new terminal with his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Gruevski. As a result, Turkish Airlines will be the first to use the new facilities. Later that day Malév, Adria Airways, Pegasus Airlines, Croatia Airlines and Jat Airways will also use the new terminal.

TAV, the airport’s operator, is keeping the interior of the new terminal a closely guarded secret. Known so far is that the terminal will have 23 check-in desks, 6 air bridges and 15 passport control counters. The new terminal also features a large statue of Alexander the Great and several duty free stores and restaurants including the first Burger King fast food restaurant in Macedonia. Skopje’s city transportation company will operate two double-decker busses from the city centre to the airport on the opening day so those interested can see the final product of the 110 million Euro investment.

Meanwhile, Mat Airways, the only passenger airline which calls Skopje its home has once again ceased operations, a second time it has done so this summer. It is unknown when and if the airline will resume flights. The Macedonian Civil Aviation Agency is talks with several airlines in hope that one will base an aircraft in Skopje from the 2011/12 winter season. One of them is a national airline from the former Yugoslavia which operates flights to Skopje.

And something from Today

The New Skopje Alexander the Great Airport

“The New Skopje Alexander the Great Airport is ready to take the stage Having seen Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Yugoslav rule, Macedonia’s 2,500-year-old Skopje city is abundant with historical, natural and cultural attractions worth exploring. The city of Skopje is now ready to welcome more visitors thanks to its newly designed and constructed airport, Skopje Alexander the Great Airport (SKP).

TAV Airports, among the leading airport operators in the world, started construction of a new terminal building in SKP immediately upon taking over the management of the Skopje and Ohrid (OHD) Airports in March 2010. TAV Airports currently have the operation rights of Alexander the Great Airport in Skopje, the largest city and the capital of the country, as well as Ohrid Airport for a period of 20 years. The new terminal building will have a grand opening on September 6, 2011.

SKP’s new terminal building can handle around 4 million passengers annually within a total area of 40,000 m2 with 23 check-in counters and 6 boarding bridges. Improvements at the airport also include a new car park, an administration building, a cargo facility, access roads and a 25,000m2 apron area. The runway has been extended to 2,950m to accommodate larger aircraft.

Equipped with the latest technology, SKP will offer smooth operations for airlines and passengers. As the major gateway of the country, the new Skopje Airport will play a key role in meeting the ever increasing travel demand within the area.

Ongoing negotiations for Macedonia to join the EU’s Open Skies program are expected to be concluded soon. Putting an end to the restrictive bilateral agreement schemes, the prospective Open Skies agreement with the EU would boost passenger traffic in Skopje. The populous Macedonian Diaspora throughout Europe is another significant factor in driving potential traffic growth, enabling year-round VFR traffic.

Recent developments in Macedonian aviation are promising. In 2010, the airport handled more than 685,000 passengers, recording a growth of 14% over 2009. Strong growth continued into the first half of 2011, totaling an 8% increase in passenger traffic.

Operating 10 airports worldwide, TAV Airports’ new airline incentive program has been crucial in attracting new airlines and establishing new routes.”

Very nice! It's a shame there are no planes based there, maybe a discussion can be had with an LCC like Wizz or Ryan?
