SKP is very close to one million passengers by year
---
TAV to pay less after Skopje success

Quote:
TAV Airports Holding, which runs Skopje Alexander the Great Airport, will pay the Macedonian government significantly less for its twenty year concession of the airport since it will handle over one million passengers this year. Under the agreement signed with the Macedonian government, TAV’s fees are reduced based on the airport’s performance. Once the airport handles over one million passengers fees are reduced from 15% of gross income to 2% of the airport’s turnover. As a result, the Turkish operator will provide the government only between 350.000 to 700.000 euros this year compared to 2.7 million in 2012. The operator estimates Skopje will handle up to five million passengers in the coming years.

TAV’s concession fee will no longer cover the subsidies the Macedonian government provides to low cost airlines such as Wizz Air to operate flights to Skopje. Ironically, it is Wizz Air which has led to such impressive passenger growth at Macedonia’s busiest airport and in turn lowered TAV’s concession fee. Currently, the Macedonian government subsidises six of Wizz Air’s routes out of Skopje to the tune of 1.4 million euros and will continue to do so until 2015. In addition, TAV provides incentives to low cost airlines by lowering landing and handling fees. The government’s initiative to subsidise low cost carriers came after talks for Turkish Airlines to base an aircraft in the Macedonian capital failed.

Macedonia’s two international airports, Skopje and Ohrid, have handled 1.003.168 passengers over the past eleven months, climbing 19% on last year. TAV will manage both airports until 2030 and has invested 120 million euros in the construction of a new terminal in Skopje and the overhaul of Ohrid Airport’s passenger terminal. The concession agreement also requires TAV to build a cargo terminal in Štip, which it has delayed until 2020. In 2012 TAV’s revenue in Macedonia totalled 18.4 million euros but it ended the year with a 10.3 million euro loss, according to the Macedonian Central Registry.

Wizz Air to launch new Skopje and Ohrid flights

Wizz Air has won an international tender to introduce new state-subsidised flights from Skopje and Ohrid next year. The budget carrier was the only one to apply for the benefits despite another four - Ryanair, easyJet, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Pegasus Airlines - all eligible to take part. According to local media, Wizz Air will launch five new routes from the Macedonian capital and will add year-long flights from Ohrid. The airline will operate services from Skopje to Sandefjord, Barcelona, Nuremberg, Lubeck (near Hamburg) and another destination in Germany, which is yet to be named. In addition, the budget carrier will inaugurate flights from Ohrid to Basel. Services will begin in June, with an official announcement expected tomorrow. According to the tender conditions, all of the newly launched destinations must be served at least twice per week.

The financial support for the new flights includes a lump sum of 40.000 euros for each new destination launched and an additional thirteen euros for each departing passenger in the first year of operations, twelve euros in the second and eleven euros in the third year of operations. According to the Macedonian Ministry for Transport and Communication, “Financial support is being provided in order to cater for the rapid development in air transport”. It adds, “Competitive and affordable prices result in more available direct flights for Macedonian citizens. We will again provide subsidies to the amount of five million euros over the next three years. This should result in more flights and better options for travellers, and at the same time increase passenger numbers”.

Wizz Air will operate flights from the Macedonian capital to a total of nineteen destinations next summer. Its passenger numbers at Skopje Airport have soared this year after basing a second aircraft in the city and introducing four new routes. The low cost carrier handled 469.227 passengers on its flights to and from Macedonia during the first ten months of the year, up over 40% on 2013. Skopje Airport has already overtaken last year’s passenger numbers and has registered its busiest year on record. The fresh subsidies and new routes will help insure even further traffic and passenger growth in 2015.

As far as I know there are discussions/plans the Bulgarians to start fly again to Skopie. May be Sofia-Skopje-Pristina-Sofia or Sofia-Skopje-Tirana-Sofia.

Looking ove that map, it seems like Moscow could be a new route, although now may be a bad time considering the economic events in Russia.

There are many Russian tourist in Macedonia in the few past years, so direct flight from Moscow to Ohrid or Skopje it may be a good idea.

Ryanair confirms Macedonia plans

Europe’s busiest airline, Ryanair, has confirmed to EX-YU Aviation News its intention to launch flights to Skopje. It comes after the country’s Prime Minister, Nikola Gruevski, said last week that the government has entered negations with “one of the most prominent low cost airlines in the world”. Ryanair’s Head of Communications, Robyn Kiely, told EX-YU Aviation News, “We are currently speaking to the Macedonian government about potential Skopje routes”. The government is willing to offer subsidies and incentives to the low cost carrier, similar to the ones provided to Wizz Air, which saw it open a base in Skopje and launch services to Ohrid as well. Ryanair is believed to be negotiating not just one but a range of services from the Macedonian capital.

Within the former Yugoslavia, Ryanair operates year-round services only to Podgorica, while all of its routes to Croatia, including its base in Zadar, are run during the summer only. Mr Kiely says the airline is satisfied with its performance in the region. “We are very pleased with our Podgorica operations, which continue to perform strongly”, he notes. Last month the carrier announced it would upgrade its seasonal service from Charleroi Airport to the Montenegrin capital to year-round operations, complementing its existing summer and winter flights from London Stansted Airport.

Ryanair’s arrival in Macedonia will mark another important milestone for Skopje Alexander the Great Airport which is quickly becoming the former Yugoslavia’s low cost hub, offering cheap flights throughout the year. In June, the airport handled 118.070 passengers, up 1.5% compared to the same month last year, with the number of flight operations unchanged. Skopje is expected to boom during July, with Wizz Air recently launching flights to Friedrischshafen, Sandefjord, Barcelona, Lubeck and Nuremberg. During the first half of the year, Skopje welcomed 608.721 travellers through its doors, an increase of 13.8% on last year. In 2014, Skopje Airport added almost 224.000 passengers and recorded growth in excess of 22%. It is expected to replicate this success in 2015, with growth estimated at 25% by year’s end.

Bratislava - Skopje flights to be launched

Bratislava - Skopje link expected by March 2016

The Managing Director of Bratislava Airport, Ivan Trhlik, has announced the introduction of flights between the Slovakian capital and Skopje. Speaking to Radio and Television Slovakia, Mr Trhlik said the new route to Skopje Alexander the Great Airport will be launched by March next year, along with flights to Moscow, Tbilisi, Sofia and two cities in Israel. He did not discuss the service in further detail, leaving out which carrier will operate the route. Bratislava is a Ryanair base, with the no frills carrier recently confirming to EX-YU Aviation News its intention to launch services to the Macedonian capital. There are currently no links between Bratislava and Skopje.

Bratislava Airport is just fifty kilometres east of Vienna, which is home to a sizable Macedonian diaspora. Ryanair opened its 71st base in Bratislava this March, basing two aircraft in the city, with plans for a third jet to be stationed there in the near future. The no frills carrier currently operates flights to thirteen destinations from Bratislava on a year-round basis, with another to be introduced in October. Furthermore, it runs an additional five seasonal summer services from the city. The Macedonian government is willing to offer subsidies and incentives to Ryanair, similar to the ones provided to Wizz Air, which saw it open a base in Skopje and launch services to Ohrid as well. Ryanair is believed to be negotiating not just one but a range of services from the Macedonian capital. Ryanair’s arrival in Macedonia would mark another important milestone for Skopje Alexander the Great Airport which is quickly becoming the former Yugoslavia’s low cost hub, offering cheap flights throughout the year.

The Macedonian Finance Minister, Zoran Stavreski, says the arrival of new airlines and the increase in the number of passengers at Skopje Airport is directly linked to the 2011 opening of a new passenger terminal and the overall improvement in infrastructure. “Airport infrastructure is one of the ways to attract tourists and it is a fact there are more tourists visiting Macedonia following the construction and reconstruction of Skopje and Ohrid airports”, Mr Stavreski said. He added, “The increase in the number of passengers since 2009 has been twelve-fold. Investment in tourism infrastructure represents a prerequisite for increasing the number of tourists arriving in the country”.

Russia's Pobeda set to commence int'l ops this winter

Pobeda (DP, Moscow Vnukovo) will indeed make its international debut this year after the CEO of Bratislava Airport, Ivan Trhlík, announced his airport would be among the first destinations the LCC may serve effective this winter.

Speaking to local media last week, Trhlík indicated that the LCC's entry into the Moscow Vnukovo-Bratislava market had been facilitated by the withdrawal of UTair (UT, Khanty-Mansiysk) earlier this year. Back then, full-service carrier UTAir pointed to a dramatic downturn in demand brought on by international sanctions for its withdrawal.

In June, Aeroflot (SU, Moscow Sheremetyevo) management reportedly asked the Russian Ministry of Transport to exempt Pobeda from local regulations which require a carrier to operate domestically for two years before venturing abroad. They argue that as the airline is a subsidiary of the Russian national carrier, it already satisfies the requirement. Pobeda was founded in December last year following the still-birth of predecessor Dobrolet (QD, Moscow Sheremetyevo).

Other destinations Pobeda is reportedly looking at include cities in neighbouring CIS states such as Tbilisi, Baku and Minsk Int'l 2, as well as Skopje, Sofia, Cyprus, Germany, Italy and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Moscow-Bratislava is for sure, and Moscow-Skopje is still just a consideration (also Moscow-Sofia and the rest of the mentioned cities).
